What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?

Primary Usage Would Penetration Testing, Hacking, Surfing, Watching Videos, Listening Music etc

Any Size Will Do
Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest?

Any Brand
Any other considerations? (e.g Battery life; Widescreen/non-widescreen; Glossy/Matte screen etc.)
Battery Life Should be Good. Most of the Time i will be using outside my home....

@o.p,specify the size...it is going to be one of the most important criteria if you plan to carry it around.
You do not need to spend 70k as your requirement is very basic.

Bottomline: Get a Thinkpad. They've had hardware that is usually best supported by the Linux Community. Most "REAL" Sys Admins in big & small companies use a Thinkpad.

For movement and reliability... Nothing beats a Thinkpad.

I've used HP, Dell 17", Compaq, Toshiba all brands of laptops over 10 years. Worked with some of these name brand companies also.

Nothing beats Thinkpads.

XPS/ Alienware is fine if you want to do GAMING.

You want something you can TAKE AROUND and RELY UPON, Thinkpad.

Honestly. 17" Thinkpad is going to be a pain to carry around.

My suggestion is go for 14/15" .. T420 (1600x900) or T520 (1900x1080) with the highest resolutions and get an external LCD with 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200.

I have 5 Thinkpads and have had 2 17" laptops before.

The more compact / small it is the more easy it is to TAKE ALONG (Trust me.. I went from 17" to 14.1" and now to 12.1".

Get a Thinkpad with the right kind of Video Card (Integrate / Dedicated or Switchable) depending on his need of Video Processing Software vs Battery Life.

15 inches will be good for me.
The most important thing is that it should run vmware smoothly.

Take it from a guy who has been running VMs since year 2001.

Thinkpad. Buy SSD & RAM and VMs will Fly. They are not CPU intensive, but RAM / Disk intensive.

The thinkpad sounds the best.. Good solid hardware. Long life.

If you don't want any bells and whistles then get the thinkpad.

As per your suggestion if i go for a laptop which has SSD.
So Do you have Any Suggestions Based on That

Go check out Thinkpad site, TP Forums and Thinkpad sizes (12, 14, 15, 17") if any at local store.

If you get SSD from lenovo it will be more expensive. Buy separately and replace HDD and put into external enclosure.

PS: Please read the post I made above. I cant define exactly which model & how you configure to get it. I figured for a guy who wants to do PENETRATION TESTING on a specialized DISTRO of LINUX, you can read the above post and finalize which model you want.

Thinkpads have always had the best Linux support and usage / recommendations by IT/ Sys Admins.
Even Corporate Business Users / Consultants swear by Thinkpads.

Contact sunny27 if you are interested in thinkpads. He is a hardcore thinkpad user and knows a lot about available options.
In India thinkpads are grossly overpriced.Try to import a T420 with 1080p screen from US.
Another solid option would be Dell Latitude series.

(Dell Latitude E5420 Details | Dell)
Operating System : Ubuntu, from Dell
Price: Rs.35, 000

Its a Dell Latitude and is supposed to be a real solid laptop. What will be the actual street price for the above? I tried Dell India online configurator and a similar config came to around 70k.

@varkey, config wise, its nothing groundbreaking, infact you can even a better config in 35k. (here).

But have no idea how much a "latitude" brand would matter, and thus the cost.

^ Yes, I am not looking at the config alone and there are many options in the same price range. But its a Latitude and I've never seen one at this price.

Yes, and 3yrs onsite warranty is very good at this price.

In my experience Thinkpads outlast any Dell latitude model notebook by a large margin. I have used e5400 for 8 months. @varkey but if you are getting Latitude E5420 @ 35K then get it. it is totally worth.

a base core2duo will also suffice for doing VA/ PT, you do not need anything high end, go for a 13/ 14 inch laptop with generic config, 4gb+ ram, and 320gb+ hdd space. you will be able to use it for the next 4-5 years for pt. if you need to do wifi pt, you will anyway need to invest in a seperate card/ usb dongle compatible with airpcap library.
