I have been using the Belkin 54G basic router from quite some time with my Reliance broadband but looks like its time to retire my stalwart and move to something better.

Let me tell first that I am not too good with the networking stuff. Yesterday I was browsing some routers on flipkart and found that I can attach my 1TB HDD and the contents would be shared over the network. Never knew this could happen :ashamed: This whole thing ignited the desire to get the router ASAP since I'll be able to put all my data on my HDD and can use on my Nexus 7 (right???)

Also the dual band thing looks great. And other some bling things.

Alright coming back to point, I want something which can provide lag free performance, with all the security thing in place. Need decent coverage as well (say 30ft with two walls in between).

What are my best options, under say 5K ?

Thanks for the suggestion Dinjo but I also want to have the media streaming capabilities so 5GHz band is kinda essential.

I am shortlisting these three:
WD 750 Router - Looks impressive on the paper and I guess the WD after sales would be superb.
Netgear N600 - Good stuff but the reviews told me that it suffers from some firmware issue. Also after sales service is questionable.
Belkin N600 - Cheapest but not sure how it competes against the competition.

I am assuming that within 30ft range, all of them would work fine for the basic wifi router functionality. Media Streaming is something I am primarily counting at. Will be using my Seagate GoFlex 1TB disc as a centralized storage/shared drive and would want all the files to be accessible to my Nexus 7 tablet. That way I won't have to copy anything on the nexus and all the media can be streamed directly from the drive. All the music, pics and HD videos (Am I right with that assumption ?????)

Connect HDD to router flashed with dd wrt get Samba/MinDLNA installed and you are up and running with RTN13U which is far better than the routers you mentioned.

I'll ask again why do you think you need 5Ghz and not 2.4Ghz , [h=3]Asus RT-N56U if you have the budget[/h]

The specs of the WD one look the best. It should be decent buy. BTW, unless you plan on streaming uncompressed blu ray videos, single band 300mbps routers will be more than adequate.

BTW, I have a 300mbps N network at home but my nexus 7 shows the connection link as 65mbps. I don't think the wifi chip on the nexus 7 supports speeds >72 mbps. Also, it does not support the 5 Ghz channel. So if streaming on the nexus 7 is your only major requirement, all of these will be an overkill.

This is strange. Nexus 7 does support the N band.

Yes for the nonce, the streaming to Nexus 7 is primary constraint but later I might shift to a different device/bigger houre/more devices/and any other requirement. Now that I am spending, I can spend 2-3 grands more and be done with it for good. Also I'd prefer to have the media streaming via attached hard disk to be the default behavior. Not that I can't install custom firmware, I just prefer not to.

With the QoS, the media traffic can be routed to the 5GHz band and simultaneously I can download the torrents at full bandwidth. So two channels for two different traffic types, mutually exclusive.

N band does not mean 300mbps speeds necessarily. It supports speeds from 54 to 600mbps (and more with multiple streams etc.)

Get the WD one. it seems like the best out of the three.

BTW, I just tried streaming a 720p video on my phone (HTC One X) and a 720p video on the nexus 7 while downloading at full speed (2mbps) on my PC (at the same time) and there was no lag.

I have a quick question, is it possible to share files in media player Asus oplay HDP R1, if we have RTN13U ?

Sorry for posting this in this thread..
