As the title says. My requirements are as follows.

1. Budget is under Rs. 3000.
2. Flat size is 1100 sq ft. The router will be placed centrally. Max distance from router will be 40 ft
3. Devices connected - 2 laptops, 1 iPad, 2 phones. Out of these one laptop and the iPad will be constantly connected. All on wifi
4. Wired Ethernet WAN and 3 more Ethernet ports required. ( for connecting devices in future)
5. USB slot for either connecting a storage device for torrenting or a 3G dongle in emergencies .
6. Good 3rd party firmware support (for experimentation, etc...)

My current old crappy Dlink router has conked out and I need to make this purchase ASAP.

TIA

I am using one for 2 yrs and so far its been great. However, I use DD WRT and not the shitty ASUS firmware which is useless and buggy.

Does it affect the range.
Yes, its much better. Can even challenge higher end models.

941ND without GbE and USB has the same radio chip and antennas as 1043ND.

These measurements were taken with an intel5300 intel pci-e wifi which is a 3x3. If you have a single stream client ie mobiles or tablet your speeds will be half as much and range little less. But apples to apples is what we are going for here. If you were to test out the four models in your house thats the ranking you could expect.

Location A: AP and wireless client in same room, approximately 6 feet apart.

Location C: Client in upper level, approximately 25 feet away (direct path) from AP.
One wood floor, sheetrock ceiling, no walls between AP and Client.

Location D: Client in upper level, approximately 35 feet away (direct path) from AP.
One wood floor, one lower level sheetrock wall, sheetrock ceiling between AP and Client.

Location F: Client on upper level, approximately 65 feet away (direct path) from AP.
Four to five interior walls, one wood floor, one sheetrock ceiling between AP and Client.

Does it affect the range.

Vivek: do you use it for torrents?

No range issues whatsoever. However, I used to keep it in one corner of the house near the window, which I shifted to the centre of the house because I was able to get the signal from the road below!

I used to run Transmission on the device, however, I wanted a better overall device, so moved to a GoFlex Home.

Heh, sticking the router at one end or any end gives the neighbours half your wifi.

go flex is a NAS, there is no wifi. Any networked NAS will be better than router plus USB. Asus put that in there for added features.

Yes, however, the real reason I got a GoFlex is that with the router, during heavy torrents, the router would crawl for all operations. Was not happy with that, so got the NAS. Will eventually sell the N13 and move to a GbE device.

So transmission still runs on the router, its just that instead of USB you are using ethernet to shift data. The router will handle that better. Am in the market for a NAS but the prices are steep.

No, the router runs as only a router. DD WRT is still enabled. Transmission is there on the GoFlex as well, which does the job now.

Also, got myself a GbE switch. The computers and the GoFlex are on this. I get higher transfer speeds on GbE.

Ah i thought so, so did you mod the goflex or does it support transmission out of the box ?

Bought from @varkey who modded it. Transmission OOTB. It does not support it by default, for that, you need to pay to get some Seagate Pro Share something for 9.99 USD. it will install the same client on the device.
