This is my current config:

Q8200 Quad Core 2.33 Ghz
4GB OCZ Gold RAM
Gigabyte G31 micro-ATX mobo
ATI 4850 1 GB (factory overclocked)
Gigabyte 450W PSU

My PC is about 3 years old, and just recently, one fine day I switch on my computer and my display is all over the place. There are streaks (white black lines) everywhere, and basically my display cannot display anything accurately. So thus, I removed the 4850 and connected my monitor to the integrated GPU, and everythings fine.

So now, I guess my 4850 has lost its life. Thus, I need a new GPU.

What I wanted to ask is:
Has anyone faced this problem? If so, any solutions?
If my GPU is actually dead, what GPUs can I consider with my current setup. Should I look for the ones in the line of 6850, GTX470? Will they fit in my microATX mobo? Will my PSU be able to handle it?
Or, is it much advisable to buy a second hand 4870 or something? There are good deals on this site with 4870 going at about Rs. 4000/-.

Which option is more feasible?

I think graphics card is giving up, but try cleaning & reassembling the whole rig.Later update the drivers & see.if all these things won't work then gpu is the culprit. Please post your whole configuration & how much can you spend for the upgrade.
:-)

I did re-assemble my GPU. I always do in 3-4 months gaps. Still, no help.

I can dish out anything between Rs. 5,000/- to Rs. 12,000/-, but I want something that can offer the best price/performance ratio. It also depends on whether these cards would support my setup.

1.Check if there's warranty remaining on your current card.

2.If there is no warranty, then I suggest the AMD HD 5770 for you PSU.

@tufel

The card is more than 3 years old, so theres no warranty, but thanks for the suggestion. Why do you think I should get a 5770? And why not a 4870, 6850, GTX460?

Get msi cyclone 6850-9.2k for 40-50 fps on games like crysis 1&2,bfbc2,msi 6770/5770 won't be able to give you high fps on hardcore graphic settings at your resolution, mention the psu name in detail it's important that you have 80+ certified psu.

Thanks for the suggestion. I really dont know the name. I know it is of Gigabyte make, and its 450W. Does this help?

If you want the name, I'll have to open up my PC, which I can only do once I'm home this evening.

Yeah, you will have to give the psu name,it's important to know what psu you have otherwise after buying the card psu will blow up due to overload.

OK, here are the latest developments.

My current PSU is a Gigabyte 450W PSU which is 'NOT' Bronze rated.

I payed a visit to SMC International Nehru Place and purchased a 6850 card, and I ask the vendor if my PSU would do OK with it. He refused outright and and said the my PC would shut down in 10 mins if I use my current PSU. So well, I purchased a Cooler Master GX 550W PSU.

So when I reached home, I first plugged in the 6850 without changing my PSU.

I switched on my PC and everything was fine.

I played Left 4 Dead 2 for 2 hours and everything was fine.

I watched a Blu Ray movie for 2 hours and everything was fine.

My Gigabyte 450w PSU was handling everything well.

Now, will this continue, or do I need to worry about stability issues or something.

My computer is running as smooth as ever, like it was always. The Cooler Master PSU is unopened, and was pretty expensive. Should I give it back? Or sell it?

It should work but then since your PSU is old, due to aging effect, its better to change over to a new PSU. If the 6850 is not overclocked, it should be within the same power levels of the 4850 overclocked one, and give much better performance too.
