Hey guys,

Last June I bought LG Jazz Theatre which only plays xvid and divx.

I want to play rest of the formats on the LCD, especially HD.

What options do I have to do the same?

I'm only looking for products which carry manufacturer warranty.

Budget is not an issue as long as unnecessary spending is avoided.

Hi,

Here's something I recommended in a similar thread :)

Which Media Player to BUY..:D

Hey there,

I was in the same dilemma just like yours. I researched a lot, and FINALLY bought AC Ryan PlayOn HD media player :D

It costed me Rs. 9500 from AqTronics - The official resellers of PlayOn HD in India. My media player came with official 2-year India Warranty :)

It's one of the best media players out there with regular community supported firmware updates :)

There were 2 MAIN reasons I went with PlayOn HD. First, you can insert a regular 3.5" HDD inside the PlayOn HD media player. Other players needed an external 2.5" HDD, which are costlier compared to 3.5". I bought a 2 TB Seagate HDD for roughtly Rs. 5000, whereas at Rs. 5000, you can only get maximum 1 TB of external HDD.

Second main reason was OFFICIAL 2 YEARS India warranty :)

Here is the official PlayOn India website....

HD Media Player, AC Ryan India, Play on HD India, True HD media players

Their main office is in Bangalore with another satellite office in Mumbai :) You can call them up :)

Also, Rs. 9500 also included shipping charges and a bonus wifi dongle, with which you can connect your PlayOn HD media player to your wifi setup at home if you have one for wireless data transfer and bittorrent downloading :)

If you have any questions, then do let me know :)

Edit: Also, AC Ryan has recently released "PlayOn HD 2" with additional features like USB 3.0, etc., etc. You can research these features on the internet, and if you want, you can wait for sometime and directly buy the PlayOn HD2, which of course will be costlier. I spoke with AqTronics about PlayOn HD 2, and they said it will take them at least a month or 2 to get the new player, so the decision is up to you.

this might be a bit extraordinary but if you fancy a bit of gaming than get a ps3.this is the best hd player out there.as ravihpa also said you can have a great choices on media players especially on ebay as they are currently on the deals of the week section.you can also make a decent HTPC at a awesome price.you got tons of options

The PS3 won't play .mkvs or any other HD format except the official ORIGINAL bluray discs. Other media players either don't have quality firmware upgrades or they require 2.5" HDDs. Also, if you're a tech freak, then only think about building your own HTPC, otherwise, it will only get hectic and confusing for you :)

Also, like I said, you can either check out the Play-On HD2 or Xtreamer Prodigy. Both of them are latest gen media players supporting 3.0 USB ports, etc., etc. You might wanna check em out :) Otherwise, nothing beats Play-On HD @ 9.5k with 2 years warranty :)

This are the formats supported by PS3

* Memory Stick Video Format

* - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)

* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)

* - MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)

* MP4 file format

* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)

* MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)

* MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)

* MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)

* MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)

* AVI

* - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)

* - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)

* AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)

* DivX

* WMV

* - VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

so imo mkv is the only one which it doesnt support but seeing the rig the opening post has it will take mere minutes to convert mkv to vob

Thanks guys.

@vantheman5211 I'm not too fond of the PS3. But will look into it nonetheless.

@ravihpa I will check those 2 out.

How much would a general purpose HTPC build cost?

What about WDTV?

i made one under 10 k with the help of our own TE's darkangel.using a ati 5450 and plays 1080p nicely on mpchc

No go for HTPC. Budget reduced to around 6-7k.

Might have to go for FreeAgent Theater+ or WDTV live or something in that cost range. Which ones better?
