Need Camera - simple to use/carry/maintain

Best one would be RX100
Nikon 3200 with the new kitlens is not a huge cam . I bought one from snapdeal for 18.5k (20k - 1.5k offer ) . I sold it because I found its smaller . and it will give much better image quality than any point and shoot or entry level mirror less cameras .put a 35mm 1.8 lens and you will get pro quality out put

Plus, its not gonna be very easy to use and big enough that you don't want to carry with you most of the time. I'll still suggest getting RX100 (any version you can afford). With decent techniques, you can get much better photographs with that than any DSLR/Mirrorless camera with kit lenses. And the size of the RX100 is so small that you can always have it on you.

RX100 is best of lot. Earlier as @nac suggested, after reading positive reviews across web, I was not able to choose any other camera. But single biggest holding factor was my budget. At 26k it was grossly out of my budget. I was looking for deals on other cameras too like NX3000. However none came down to $250 mark. After much of wait for deals and see-saw, I went ahead with Nikon 1 S2 with additional spare battery. It costed me $202.

I don't know much about this camera, but the price makes me think why not. And you don't mind about the bulk, you're okay with kit lens, better IQ than your phone camera.. Everything seems fine...

Yes, it is brand new with 11-27.5mm lens. Now since I have saved approx 4k in my budget (excluding cost of additional battery), if needed can get some other good but compact lens.

I would like to specially thank @nac and @sabby. I was getting constant help from you two. Also it took me approx 3 months to get a camera :P

Congratulations !! The fact that it took you 3 months to decide for the camera actually tells me that you are more interested in Photography than you initially thought :) So an interchangeable lens system may prove more useful in the long run.
Couple of things - 1. The crop factor for Nikon 1 system is 2.7 which means any lens you use, you have to multiply the focal length by 2.7 to get the full frame equivalent focal length. 2. The best thing about mirror-less is you can virtually use any lens using adapters. So instead of buying new expensive lenses for CX mount (i.e. the Nikon 1 system mount), get cheap old manual legacy primes and the corresponding adapters.

I vaguely remember this section (I think I made a very similar comment when I learned that this section exists). After Sabby's comment, I am remembering that photography section exists in this forum. Why not bring that section here where it belongs?

As of now, it sits under the Social Lounge, couple down from General Talk. I guess the intention was to keep the Gear/Equipment sections separate when it was created. Let me take it up with Renegade.

congrats on your new purchase! I too have my eyes set on the Nikon 1 series for a year now. I already have a nikon D3300 for stills,but would love something better for videos.
so a humble request to you to post your view regarding video quality/features of Nikon S2. I am esp interested to know if AF servo works as intended when recording videos

Thanks !! I will post my impressions. Also I would need help in executing video recording as you described. I am total noob but I have read a lot on web in last 2 weeks or so.

Yeah, after reading your previous post I looked for that thread. Since I don't browse around all the section of the forum, I didn't know there is a separate section for photography exists and I totally forgot after learned it exists.
If for any reasons you guys don't think it's right to move that section here, at least you can create a duplicate link here in camera section and we can access photography section right from here. Just an idea, you guys see if it's possible or not.

Now this camera is bought and on it's way, which microSD card is best suited for this camera ? It accepts microSD/SDHC/SDXC cards.

Go by the manual suggested memory cards. For mine, it's class 4 and I have seen class 6 for some compacts. Most likely class 6 should be good enough for your cam. And class 10 is not that expensive, so you can consider class 10 too.

If you shoot RAW or more videos, get yourself higher capacity memory cards. And get two memory cards instead of one (like 2x16 instead of 32 or 2x8 instead of 16). If it's just for jpeg photography, one is good enough.

No, they did not supply one with camera. Manual says they have tested Sandisk, Toshiba and Panasonic cards for various categories and sizes. I was thinking of getting a 32GB one for now since I m not much into RAW photography but might record occasional video. Normally any card works with camera or it is mandatory to use tested by them ?
 
Since the discussion on RX100 is still on, does it make sense to spend the extra money for the RX100 2/3 over the plain RX 100?

Yes, you can use any brand as long as they are equal to or better than the suggested class rating. As lower rated take long time to save RAW files and if you're shooting video, camera likely to stop recording if the writing speed is not good enough for the quality/frame rate you choose to record.

It's pretty subjective, you have to weigh up the priorities and decide if the feature they offer is worthy enough for you to spend extra.

Generally, people suggest to go for two smaller memory card then one single bigger memory card. Just to have a substitute in case if the one goes corrupted or give some problem you can use the other. Though I am sure you can use any brand, just to be sure check for S2 user review if you can use the brand you go for.

That's great. Seems like they pick randomly and ask them to pay if they are liable.
Few festivities are ahead and you can try this cam. Share some photographs in photography thread, it could use some activity. But please upload smaller resolution photographs. 800px long edge is good enough for web viewing.
With title bar, menu bar, address bar, task bar and forum header taking away some pixels leaving only 800+px for viewing and this is for those who have 1080p monitors. For others it's even less. Wouldn't be better to see the images in one go rather than scrolling bit by bit???

RX100 2: adds wifi capabilities, same lens (28-100/1.8-4.9) as the RX100
RX100 3: adds wifi + Sony apps capability, new lens with shorter reach but faster aperture (24-70/1.8-2.8)
RX100 4: adds superslow mo video + 4K video + slightly better AF + everything else of RX100 3

Source: I shoot with these all year along. :P
