I did mention that the expected price is mandatory. Selling price is the price at which the item sells, and is not required to be posted at all.

For your last point, simply disable post count in market section :P

Don't complicate the Market section too much... my 2 cents:

* Let sellers ask for what they want => Buyer is free to ask about current market price in other threads, it's his responsibility to decide if a deal is worth it.

* Let buyers lowball as much as they want => Seller is free to abuse lowballers and delete their posts at his/her discretion. Sellers' also free to sell to anyone he/she likes.

You didnt get me. By selling price I meant the expected price :P

Expected price = mandatory

Present market price = mandatory

Selling price = not required

^ u are confusing too much...

I'd like to tell the same thing multiple people are telling....the buyer needs to know the market price , grey price .. & all the stuff before getting it..

Suppose i put a mx518 for sale & put the current market price as 2950/- & expected price as 2300/- . . .how will u tackle it?..

I can even point out some lame shope who sell these mice at tat price..;)

the present market price can wary from shop to shop and from region to region, and so if a thing if for 12k at a certain shop, it may be for 10.5k in another shop and so the buyer may be mislead

Agrees!!!

I agree with Renegade that posting the current market price should be mandatory. How much the thing costs currently along with how long/how well the thing has been used is the only true indication of how good a deal the seller is actually offering...

I know the prices vary from region to region but there is lots of stuff on sale which isnt available everywhere (not everyone on TE lives in Mumbai/Bangalore/Delhi). In that case what reference does someone use for the market price? The seller can always post the approximate market price and + or - 5-10% of that price may be considered the figure to work with.

Let's face it.. What makes more sense - asking the seller to find out the market price of a single product that he is intending to sell or asking the buyer to find out the market price of a dozen similar products that may be up for sale? The market section isnt just about the seller you know.

Of course the seller could just post whatever comes to his mind as the market price in which case somebody could maybe inform either him or the mods..

I dont think asking a seller to quote current market price makes sense. What about products that are so old and unavailable? How does one get a price for that?
Most of the sellers in the Market section do mention the current selling price if they want to say what a good deal their product is!
A lot of purchasers who feel the price is high, also mention that current price and compare....
I dont think that letting the seller delete posts in his thread is correct. What if he is selling something at a higher price and someone points it out...and the seller deletes that Post. I would call that extremely unfair.

The market works...if there was some way to just restrain ourselves from posting OT, then it would be perfect.

^^ that never works. People always end up posting stupid stuff and crapping thread. You can restrain yourself but 1000 other people wont care.

And anyway if you find the price is higher than market price, you can always pm the seller. If he was not aware he will adjust the price as everyone wants to sell the product in the end. And I find that most of the buyers do inquire about the price and know its a good deal. They still want it at 40-50% of the market price and end up bidding insanely low amounts hoping they might just get lucky. But that spoils many threads.

Its a complex issue but Vivek you know what happens when you try to sell stuff at decent price and still get lowballed. For some sellers it does not matter much. But for some its a loss of an opportunity to get decent amount which might be vital for their next upgrade.

After yesterday's fiasco, I felt that the mods need to really crack down on the market section. A few points that I thought about:-

  • Any sale in the market section is a personal sale, and as such, has nothing to do with current retail prices.

  • The price at which any products sells at on TE, does not in any way set a standard for similar products that are for sale.

Your point is what is having its fair share of supporters and detractors and is tough to decide on. We had formerly decided in support of it (i.e. no thread crapping in the market, either you're buying or you're not).. but recently we have gone soft on it for a reason.

Some people (mostly the sellers) feel they should have their say in what price they set, and dont want thread crapping from anyone else dictating what would be a logical price.

The other half (mostly the buyers) feel such posts shouldn't be restricted. Even recently gmano - who got a sour deal by Viking - had posted saying mods should not delete posts by others warning about the product, price, etc etc... as an unsuspecting newbie may land up and get ripped off.

This seems like a potential deadlock, which is why the confusion on which way to go :hap5:

Needless to say in both cases , lowballing should NOT be tolerated.

I have a request.:ashamed:

It should be mandatory for seller to at least post links to the exact products on sale, especially if they can't produce pics.:cool2:
Also right details.:P
Providing mile long specs ain't necessary though.

Sometimes there are threads just mentioning the nature of the product, say - cpu + mobo for sale.:(
Seller does not even bother to provide what socket cpu, which specific mobo.:(

Such vague threads and ones with wrong info should be locked immediately till the OP PMs mods with the right info or something like that.:cool2:

This problem has a very simple solution. Do not allow newbies into the market section :D Of course, you'll argue that the market section is what draws maximum registrations, and we need more members to keep TE running.....which brings us back to square one.

Just on that.. we dont need new members from market section to keep TE running. However you as a seller would need more members to buy the stuff. If we restrict that then sales would go down. This wont hurt TE but the sellers.

Other than that it is not the newbies that are causing the problem. I suppose the reason you started this thread is because of gmano-viking and techhead-udit-kido encounters. I would not call any of them a newbie and they have been on TE long enough to know what to do and what not to do.

The system currently in place is as good as it can get unless we plan to take everything in our own hands. Our job will be to keep those unwanted and unnecessary posts to absolute minimum. We shall stick to our own rules and ensure that only the seller and the prospective buyers are able to make any posts.

I know we can't cut off the rest but we can try and keep them under control. Our upbringing is such that we can't help but show our greatness at every little opportunity that we get. Rest assured, peeps will jump right in protesting every unfair deal that they could sniff. Sometimes its good, sometimes its bad but I guess its part of the process and thats what keeps the community feel going.

If its only for buying and selling without any discussions or controversies, I'd say EBAY is a much better option. I wonder why you need TE for this.

Well said QF...

After all said and done here, it didnt take any long for people to start crapping in Market again.
