Hi,
My college is using Cyberoam Security, and it sort of updates regularly as well. Basically they allow us to view some sites, like TE or gmail and the likes, but no torrents, music or even many other forums and the like. It blocks messenger and is quite a pain.

I've heard of and tried out slyberoam but it didn't work. I can use proxies and move around the net, but can't download most sites, not even .exe files, which sucks cuz it's an IT college and we need a lot of software on the net. And it's college, so personally they should allow torrents and other stuff too, right? I mean I'm in the hostel so am I supposed to stay out of touch for the four months of my hostel life? :@

And there aren't any cyber cafe's which are easily accesible, I live in Dwarka so the markets are plenty, but not tech-friendly.

Please give me some direct help or some reading material from where I could learn to do what is required... Thanks! :hap2:

Oh and I'm using Fedora and Windows XP, so either system can be used by me to do the needful. BTW I've only used Fedora for 4 months but I'm trying so learning new things will be very satisfying for me.

Thanks!

If you need to download educational software you can talk to the college authorities and they will probably open up access for you temporarily or figure out a way for you to download it if your case meets their merits.

Censoring of internet access for students is for two reasons, one it helps ration and control the bandwidth and second it helps keep illegal materials off campus. For people who really need full access normally there is a designated and monitored workstation that bypasses restrictions (the sysadmin does the needful, Cyberoam is pretty flexible that way).

And all of your activity on Cyberoam is traceable, including this post and thread. Be careful what you ask for - trying to bypass the firewalls may be a breach of rules, so I'm not going to dole out any further information on how do do it, even if I knew (which I don't).

You would the think the network admins of an IT college would lock down the system pretty tight, wouldn't you? There are ways past it, but if you get caught, well...

Yes use TOR, I have used it with WebSense, it gives you the option to use the Sock5 in your torrent downloading application, you can also configure IE with that as the proxy should work, not much info about Cyberoam

well actually we (hostellers) went up to the admin and told him about our problem. He said that he couldn't help us. We said that if we were forced to we'd find some way to bypass it and then use the net whichever way we wanted. And he smiled and said, "the ph.d. students are already doing it. there's no problem, except that I can't do it for you". SAD case...
I'll try tor once I return to the insti, this week is off :P
Any other ideas, people?

One piece of Advise from the "smartest moron" of my engineering college... do not do this man not worth it... well i was what you say among smartest guys of my engineering college everybody knew me.. got a lot of respect among my peer for flaunting authority.. having a lot of trouble with the college administration... from server hacks to paper leaks, to bypassing internet proxy, bashing up college security... Been there, done that... what you are not realizing right now is that it might be what earns you "Wah! Wah!" among your friends... but pissing of college a bad bad idea... they can really ruin your career...

They control a lot of internal marks, and not to mention external viva are mostly filled up on their recommendations... and most important of them all, college campus recruitment, and recommendation. No matter you know computer engineering inside out, memorized books and a hell lot smarter than your HOD... you will not clear a single college recruitment and hell like in my case, they can even stop you from participation at all.. The same guys who use to worship you will make excuses, as how much the job mean to them and since they are allowed in the campus recruitment... they cannot possibly be help to you...

Then what man!!! its just some stupid softwares and time wastage on internet.. buy a wifi connection like tata indicom photon+, relaince broadband +, subscribe to gprs service unlimted from mtnl BSNL anybody... its just money man at most 1200 bucks a months, ask your "Friends" to pool money and get it ....

Remember people are vindictive by nature, antagonizing them might seem fun now but every dog has its own day and if you do not want to be bitten on wrong day at a wrong time... Be nice and respect Authority...

On the other note on spirit of youth, and Not learning from mistakes of others and being a regular "wise guy" best bet will be setting up an encrypted http tunnel over network using some free domain as intermediate...

this works like a vpn... only they cannot read what you are viewing...

Peace

apart from a secured private HTTPS Tunnel, nothing much would help you.

Try to get a hoster like OVH - set up your tunnel, and go free, be sure though, the logs would show u as the top user, even if it looks like HTTPS only, and they cant find out what you did.

Best of luck, IMHO its not worth it, like the post above says.

Slightest chance, if ur in a hostel which is at Vidya Vihar, Mumbai ;)

hanji ... there is a possibility ... works here in PUNJAB for Most of the Universities ...

Cyberoam ... Linux Based ... Embedded Systems ... for Unified KHATRA Management ...

What we did in the various Universities is Port Scanning on our Internet Gateway ( not the WIFI router | CISCO GBIC int. ) ... what amazed us is that all of the UNIVERSITIES were SETUP alike ... using same TEMPLATES ... used Default Logins for the Devices ... ( Wifi Routers and Cisco Catalyst Switched .... leaving CyberOAM Device )

Port Scanner Software used ... nMap with xenGUI

Valid Proxy Settings for Bypassing CyberOAM ... Here in Our Case ... the Default Squid Proxy port ... Port No. 3128 ( if Default port no. is changed - nmap while Scanning wud let u know the Appropriate Opened Ports with Description ) ...

So Setup the Valid Proxy Setting in your Browser ... and Enjoy Freedom !

Other way to Bypass ... HTTP Tunnelling
