Need help enabling "disabled volume/record controls"

Hi!

Somehow, volume controls were modified. I don't know how, whether it was done it on its own or I did something. Really I don't know. Now recording volume is down (It's audible but not the maximum). I have attached two images (from imageshack), please have a look. And tell me whether it's normal or it's changed. SPDIF volume in "Volume" is reduced and Line volume, CD volume, Mic volume, Stereo volume in "Record" are reduced and these all are disabled and I am not able to push it to maximum.

I want to keep them at maximum (I mean, the things which need to be at maximum for recording at good (max) sound). How to enable it? Please explain step by step. Thank you.

Info: OS: Win XP sp2; Audio drivers are up to date;
How did I come to know that the recording volume is low?
I am using Audacity to for recording purpose. I pulled an audio file which was recorded few months ago, I compared it with the recent one. The recent one's wave is too small.

I have uninstalled and installed from the motherboard CD, but that didn't fix up the issue. So I downloaded the latest version from the realtek official website and installed the new version. But neither did this help the issue...

Info: Motherboard - Asus P5G-MX

Remove hardware and then try autodetect and then install the drivers which were working fine before and not the new ones. If that doesn't help could also be a an OS issue and the driver files maybe be conflicting with something you installed or removed recently. Maybe you can try doing a restore to the point when the controls worked properly.
