Need Help : Not able to download .torrent files from most sites in laptop

I have been downloading torrents for 6-7 years now.

Recently my company gave me a new laptop (Dell E7440 Ultrabook)
Issue is that I am not able to download .torrent files from most sites where I get a "This web page is not available" error.

Sites from I am able to download:
  • hd-space.org
  • kickass.to

Sites from which I am not able to download (almost all sites)
  • iptorrents.com, desitorrents, fresh-on, last torrents and almost everywhere else.

  • Question - Is there a restriction in OS to do this (Win7 32bit is installed in the laptop)
just to clarify, I can download from my phone/desktop in the same network but issue is only with laptop. I am not currently transferring the torrents from the phone to laptop and then downloading
 
Your company must have put restrictions in hosts file or maybe in antivirus or firewall. Torrent sites are blocked in many AV programs like Norton and McAfee I think. I read somewhere that Norton will give warning about malicious site when trying to surf pirate sites.
 
But the issue is I am able to download the .torrent files from some sites.
And anyways for the sites which have option to download the file as a .txt file i am able to download (freshon.tv - i can download the torrent file as a .txt)
I check AV but could not see that blocking the downloads. I am anyways using utorrent in the company laptop and have full admin access - Play games as well.

Could there be any Windows settings?

Nopes...None of the sites have it:( Apart from one freshon.tv.
but I am really puzzled why its not consistent with all sites and why I am able to download from some sites and not from rest:(

have you tried downloading with proxy settings.
tried using google / open dns .
tried using internet explorer.
can you uninstall & reinstall lan card / wifi drivers on your laptop
 
did you try the laptop @ home with different net connection ? How about testing it with a live linux distro and a different net connection ?
 
Let us take this one piece at a time.
Firstly, tell us what security stuff is there on the PC, as in AV/internet suites, etc. This could give us a clear idea as to what is stopping the download.

I feel its being done either by a third party program on the computer OR a network setting, on the lines of Squid with .torrent files block. Since you can download .torrent files from two sites makes me feel it is not a Microsoft Group Policy setting. And it is not a DNS block, since that stops the whole site from being accessed.

Microsoft Group Policy has an option to stop the files from being run, but I know of no setting that blocks them from downloading the same.
 
Sorry for the late response. Was out over the weekend and enjoying the sleazy Hong Kong night life:)
Issue is that the previous company laptop I had - had the same OS and Operationg system and I was able to download everything (Dell XPS 1330)

What proxy seetings? Can you link me?
Tried IE, Chrome, Google - same result
Uninstalled and re-installed LAN drivers

yes. Tried at Home network, office netwrok, Hotel network, Phone network as well :) ...No result

AV is 'Symantec Endpoint protection' version 12.1.4013.4013
I think there is no other question you asked but below is some other additional info:
USB drive is enables, I have admin privileges, I have access to all sites, You tube, porn sites as well. So I don't think restriction is an issue

Have you tried to add torrent url directly to your torrent client? In utorrent go to: File>Add torrent from url, or ctrl+U shortcut.
 
If you are login into an offline domain account then try creating a temporary local administrator user account and then login into it and try torrents.
Custom restrictions are possible on a companies domain account.

Try editing the host file and see whats the extra stuff.
 
Will create an offline account and try. But doubt that will work as the offline account should have the same restrictions as my acount (I am admin) - we don't have any group policies as such.

For Hosts - since this was working in my old laptop i don't see any problems here. I am able to access literally anything and also able to download torrent files from utorrent.
Just not able to download the file extension from some sites
