i want to connect 2 pc's to my linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband Router wrt54gc so they can share files and play games on lan. i don't want them to cross wire lan as then i can't access internet any one know how can i do that??
i don't know much things so please explain in detail.

wrt54gc has four Ethernet ports ... connect both PC to them via LAN cable ... so it will look like this

PC1 <---> wrt54gc <---> PC2

Now let say wrt54gc has this IP address ... 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0

then you can assign these IP addesses to PC1 and PC2 ... PC1 - 192.168.1.10/255.255.255.0 ... PC2 - 192.168.1.20/255.255.255.0

Now all three PC1, PC2, wrt54gc are in one network and you can share files.

If you have WiFi adapters in PC1 and PC2 then you don't need LAN cables to connect to router.

Thanks for replying.

i assigned 192.168.1.10/255.255.255.0 to one computer but now i can't use internet with that pc i can access the router. i am using PPPoE connection type.

and i don't have wifi adapters, so lan only

also i can ping from pc1 to pc2 but not pc2 to pc1
it says request timed out, and 100% packet lose

^ Is DHCP Server enabled on router? If so then you don't need to manually assign IP addresses.

pc1 might be having firewall ( or internet security suite) which is blocking ping ... as you are able to ping from pc1 to pc2 ... there is no issue.

Let us know settings of your router and IP address of PC1 when you are able to access internet

My pc1 ip when checked at whats my ip is 117.199.116.13

whatsmyip will show IP address assigned to your router on broadband/gateway port .. here it is 117.199.116.13

Since you have DHCP enabled ... there is no need to manually assign IP address to PC1 and PC2

And for file sharing you don't need to disable firewall ... you can make exceptions in firewall if needed ... however for default windows file sharing it's not needed

For file sharing ... do google :) ... very easy
