PC Peripherals need help!! Whts the diff in overall performance !! 5400rpm vs 7200rpm

Ok friends i m nearing my Upgrade plans (as u can see in my sig).
As u can see i m buying a self Customized Dell notebook. But i needed one help.
Dell gives a 60gb 5400rpm as a stock HDD. But it can be upgraded to 120gb 5400rpm HDD for $113 more, 80gb 7200rpm HDD for $137 more and a 100gb 7200rpm HDD for $195 more.
I just wanted to know that how much big is the performance diff between a 5400rpm n 7200rpm HDD. My primary needs will be Gaming (ofcourse), Music (mp3) and Movies.
Help me plz i m going to order this Tuesday.

even i was considering the same thing when i got the laptop from dell.

but they are charging too much for 7200rpm hdd which according to me isnt worth the premium they are asking.

ofcourse there is a difference. but u can live with it.
 
Is there really not much diff between them. I have heard from many ppl that the diff can be too much sometimes.
 
In desktops the difference is quite noticable, but I'm not too familiar with the architecture used on mobile chips and what interface the HDD uses.

My suggestion : Stick to stock HDD :)
 
The Drives i m talking about are SATA drives.

Nah Stock HDD is only 60GB 5400rpm. i want more, Dell offers upgrade to more storage with some $$$ more..

If you are going to do lot of HDD transfers like copying from DVD or HDD to HDD transfers then u might a lot of difference.
 
I will not be copying too much data from a DVD to HDD, I will do it but its not considered among primary uses.
 
I will do one thing i will get a 80GB 7200rpm HDD n store all the mp3s on a DVD so whenevr i want to play mp3 i will just insert the DVD n listen. A 8.5GB DVD will hold a lot of MP3s and if some space is left i will add some more applications onto it. So it becomes a Portable 8.5GB storage media. And consume the HDD for only storing Games n imp applications....

Btw can i install two HDD in a Dell Inspiron

Rather, save the cash and get an external 40GB Firewire HDD.

The La Cie drives look hot :D !
 
Thats tooo exp. prob the most exp storage maker.

I want a External storage for storing those things which i most prob be using at home. I dont want to occupy the space on my internal HDD with those things which i will not use whn i m traveling. Can any of u advise me a good external HDD for 2.5K

btw how about this Seagate, seems great to me.linkkk

Lol anish there are plenty of lappy's that can take two HDD's :bleh:

SCK the 7200 rpm HDD will only improve data transfer, ie windows loading time, load times in games and in transferring data to and from the hard disk. It wont increase the actualy performance of the games. IMO its not worth the extra cash to go for a 7200 rpm hdd. It would be better to spend it on getting a bigger 5400 rpm HDD or on a better GPU or Proccy.
 
Im sure a 17" Laptop can take 2 HDD's... Atleast i hope so :S...

Anyways, you should get a 120gb atleast anyways.

Nah this notebook doesnt support dual HDD, i have read many reviews.
The maximum i can get for a 5400rpm HDD is 120gb n for 7200rpm i can get 100gb(but this option is way to expensive)
