Day before yesterday suddenly My system rebooted and HDD was not detected.

I tried different ports, different data and power cables.

Also tried WD Lifeguard tools, and it showed hdd not detected error : 0120 :(

now while i try to recover the data from the hdd, i have an old backup of that 500 GB hdd taken with Acronis True Image lying on external hdd.

Now the question is : Can I restore this back up to another HDD of Different Size or I need to have same size hdd.

If I can restore back up to a different HDD then for the time being I will reprieved of reinstallation of OS and all the Apps.

Please clarify, then I will attempt the same.

you can take different sized disk too. ensure it has more space than the os partition you are going to restore. Also make sure that there is not more than one partition on whole disk if disk is used one.

If the 500GB was a single partition, then it would be very easy for u.
Otherwise, the new HDD should have capacity for accomodating the entire backup. Create a partition of 500GB or more and recover in that.

Do u have a Acronis Startup disc to do the recovery?

If u have multiple partitions backup, then recover one by one each of ur partition on ur new HDD. And make sure to make C: as active while recovery.

thanks for the answers friends.

will attempt tomorrow.

I had 500 GB multiple partitioned hdd which failed. I have new unused 250 GB hdd which i will use for restore. the data was not full 500 GB so I am rest assured.

and yes i have acronis rescue cd.

NEWS about old hdd : I checked the PCB there are melting signs under the fixing screws that means PCB is dead.
there is one help a friend has offered if it succeeds then good.

but is restore is successfull than majority problem of data will be solved i will lose only last 2 months new data only. downloads i am not worried as i can be accumulated again.

only thing i am worried about is documents and research papers.

you can go for data recovery services also, if pcb is the only issue, should not be very expensive to recover.

be sure of having some means to edit and rectify entries in boot.ini once you restore system partition. Otherwise while booting restored system will keep giving some errors of hal.sys or some others. Are you going to restore entire hdd with all partitions or just system partition?
