Need help with basic networking in win 7

I need to connect 2 PCs running win7 in a network. I connected both with a crosscable, and set the ip to 10.10.1.201/10.10.1.202 and subnet to 255.255.255.0

Can't see the PCs in network places. What else do I need to do?

P.S. - I can let windows handle this automatically, but I don't want to for certain reasons. I want to get the network working manually.

go to network and sharing centre>>change advance sharing setting>> then turn on network discovery, file and printer sharing etc etc. u can disable password protected sharing too

Try this

PC I

IP Address: 10.10.1.201

Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway and DNS: leave blank - let the internet connection sort out your DNS, and it will be the gateway for this PC, so you don't need to set a gateway at the network card.

PC II

IP Address: 10.10.1.202

Mask: 255.255.255.0

Try without gateway if works else use setting as mentioned below

Gateway: 10.10.1.201

Also both PC's should have different names.

Let windows decide the ip, u simple go to network and sharing centre and change all setting for sharing like network discovery and file sharing..turn password requirement for sharing to "off".

then restart both pc's..

Actually, both PCs are not on win7. :ashamed: One PC is on win7, the other I keep changing from xp to vista to linux :P

I don't want to use homegroups as they are win7 specific. And between win7 and linux, I'll be happy if both PCs can just ping each other.

^ you tried my solution??

Yep, thats what I did. Turns out it works if I turn off firewall on both PCs. Now I'm trying to get it working between win7 and ubuntu. (At least pinging)
