Need help with file formats.

I don't know where this query is supposed to be, but I have faith in the mods to place it in its appropriate section.

I want to know if we can hide files by changing their file extensions [converting them], like changing a .mp3 [common music file] file to .odt [open document format], and then reverting to .mp3. Will such a change be possible, will the file function is there such an option?

Thanks in advance for all the replies. Cheers!!

It depends on how hard you wish to make, for the other person to see it.

If the other person is not so computer savvy, the most easy way in XP is to right click on the file, select properties, check the toggle box at the bottom that says "Hidden". Then go to Control Panel --> Folder Options --> View (tab) --> Select "Do not show hidden files and folders" --> Click OK. That will hide the file.

This won't hide the file, but rather won't allow the user to play it with the media player.

The other person should still be able to still see the file and could possibly play it with any media player, if chooses to do so by going via the open file option.

Changing a file's name will not have any effect on the contents within it. You can even rename a .mp3 to a .txt. The extension is merely an indicator for the OS about which software is needed to access the contents of the file. You can also skip the extensions.

None of the above will be able to hide the file though. Lots of options are available for that, ranging from setting the hidden/system flag to keeping a hidden encrypted partition.

Do you want to hide files or do you want to mess with renaming files?
