need help with lan!!!!

our institute has provided only one lan port and i hav to share it vth my roommate is ther any thing i can do to actually share the port.. i mean a switch or something... switch costs hell lot of money.. something cheap.. i hav a desktop any my frnd has a laptop.. some one suggested that i put a lan card thur which he will take connection.. i dont think it will ork.. or will it....
i desperately need some help... i cant share lan....
 
best bet , install a wifi card on ur desktop......ur roomate would already have wifi on his laptop.....buy a wireless router (that cost u can split with ur roomy, belkin and netgear base models come for 1.5-1.6k , so not costly too).....best solution , no wires , both happy :D
 
if u r comfy with wires.... install 2 nic cards in the desktop to make it a gateway and share internet through ICS ... then one output of NIC will go to a port repeater switch (500/- from netgear) .... ... connect the rest of the computers through this switch through patch cable ... yr desktop will issue all the systems ip ...... but in this case the desktop needs to be turned on all the times ..... if you have money go for a multiport wireless router ...(just 1500/-)
