Hey,
I'm planning to get a second PC for myself soon and I need some help with the config/pricing. I will be using the PC for gaming, 2D graphics design, vector stuff and 3d modelling along with general music, movies etc etc. I will not be overclocking anything, so do not take overclocking into account. I'm sorry if I'm not precise enough as I'm not really familiar with component models. My preferences are given below in the following format:

<Component> - <Brand/model> - <Budget>
Motherboard - ASUS A8N-E or better - 6500
Processor - AMD Athlon 64 or X2 - 12000
Gfx card - XFX 6800 GT/GS or better - 20000
RAM - Any good brand, DDR 1/2 2GB - 8000
HDD - 2*40GB (or higher) 7200 RPM - 8000 (I need 2 HDDs, not 1)
CD RW - Any - 1200
DVD ROM or RW - Any - 1500 (I specifically want two optical drives as mentioned here)
400/450W PSU + Cabinet - Any - 3000 (total)
K/B and Mouse - Any Logitech - 2000
Monitor - 17" Flat CRT - 7000
Speakers - 2.1 or 4.1; Creative, Altec Lansing or Bose (in my dreams) - 3000 to 5000

Anything else you think I missed or I should get, please let me know. The total cost should ideally be around 60-65k, so please suggest the best components (within the brands mentioned) that I can get. :)

Thanks!
- DD

for a 20K graphics budget, go for the Leadtek 7900GT which Mohit has posted in the forums.....

And no Athlon X2 is for 12K.... your best bet would be the 3500+...

DVD-RW --- BenQ 1650 for around 2.8K

Go for any 2 GB kit.. but the best is Micron 5BD which can do 2-2-2-5 at 200mhz(since you wont be oc'ing, this is the best for you). Vignesh has 2 GB of Micron on sale on TE. check the market section

dude i have a brand new i mean brand new sealed venice 3500+ fot around 10k lemme know if ur interested comes with billa nd warranty 3 years.
*actually it is wit my dealer i had ordered it and got a opty myself so now its no use as he have no amd customers*

@every1: I'm not buying the new PC immediately as I only have like 30k or something atm. I'll have another 30-40k in a few weeks. If the prices are expected to drop anytime soon, then please let me know.

@Nikhil: Cool! I didn't know 7900 GT was for under 20k :| I would really prefer an XFX card though as it's easily available with my dealer. 7800 GTX or GT or whatever will be enough for me at the moment. I'm looking to cut the costs, so 7900 is outta the question. BTW, how much does a good X2 cost? Is the 3500+ good enough for gaming and extremely graphics intensive jobs like complex vectors and modelling in 3D Studio? How much is it's clock speed?

O, and I would really prefer buying locally rather than online as I don't want to risk damages during transport.

3500+ is 2.2 ghz.... It is quite good...

But if you want an X2, then you will have to shell out 18K for the 3800+.

Or buy an Opty 165 for 17K and oc it very slightly just to 2.2 ghz. I know you dont want to oc but would you oc very slightly if you could save 1 thousand for much better performance??

Opty 165 has 1 MB x 2 = 2 MB L2 cache.... compared to 512 kb x 2 = 1 MB for X2 3800+.

And 7800GT is still not lessthan 20K. But Mohit has got a good offer from Zebronics who are importing Leadtek cards into India and the price for a 7900GT is 20K + tax.

If you cant spend so much, then go for the ATI X1800GTO which Darky is getting for 16K.

And you wanting to buy locally wont get you the best stuff..... if you make use of Darky's offer and get the 1800GTO, then he will have to ship it to you wherever you are..... But dont worry... he will ship it well.... Why dont you talk with him and get your doubts clarified abt the damage in shipping part :P ??

Oh wait.... Darky is in Pune too.... you can pick up the card locally :P..

Hey guys, thanks for all the suggestions. I've decided on all the components except the Monitor now. Please give me some suggestions about which monitor I should get. Thanks! :)

@ Vignesh/ anybody:
Can you tell me the specs of Viewsonic E70+SB?/
Does it support 1600*1200?? and at what refresh rate

17" CRTs do not support 1600x1200 - for that you need a 19" CRT/21" LCD.

The Viewsonic or for that matter any 17" CRT can do a max of 1280x1024@60-65Hz. The best setting would be 1152x864@75Hz.

Well there is monitor up for grabs in pune... Its a 21" Flat... Can get you for 12K... Let me know if interested :)...

Nope ur wrong there. The Acer AF715 and Viewsonic G76+sb can do 1600X1200 and that too @ 75 Hz. However there is really no use running it at such high res on a 17". Best option would be to run at 1280X1024 @85 Hz on these monitors.

If u really want X2, the price of the X2 3800+ has fallen, its just under 16k now. Or if u really want dual core the Pentium D 820 is around 12k. Mobo the A8N-E is good(if ur going for an AMD processor that is). Hard disks i would say go for 2X160 GB SATA in RAID 0 which will be 3.5k X 2 =7k. See for the gfx, the 7800 series are pretty much the same price as the 7900 so if u can go for the 7900 GT, 20k is a good price. U wont find a 7800 for lower. Else the x1800 GTO/7600 GT for 15k. RAM either UCCC or 5BD as mentioned by nikhil. Speakers i would say Altec Lansing ATP-3 for 2.1(2.9k) or Altec Lansing 251i for 5.1( 4.3k). And kb and mouse, are you specifc only logitech? U can get regular multimedia Kb + Mouse for 800 bucks. I would suggest Microsoft. Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 ( 1000 dpi) + Multimedia kb.
