I would be going in for a PDA within a month and so far I have identified 4 models.

Windows OS

HP iPaq hx2490 - Rs.22000

HP iPaq hx1950 - Rs.15000

Palm OS

Palm Lifedrive - Rs.23000

Palm T|X - Rs.17500

Now I cannot decide between these, if I go by the reviews online then I would end up buying nothing. If any of you have any hands on experience then please let me know.

If I just go by the features then the Lifedrive is a clear winner though I am inclined towards the T|X. What I am concerned about is the reliability (and stability of applications) of these things and the customer support. I dont want them to die on me. I have read so many stories about PDAs going poof and refusing to boot up.

What do you need the PDA for? Your requirements basically.. can they be fulfilled by one of those PDA phones or are looking for something specific?

I am looking basically for office applications and wi-fi connectivity so that I can browse as well. Voice recording is a must. Other than that everything is an icing.

Good thing with Palm is that they have high rez and large screen so good for browsing but the windows OS browsers can handle heavy sites unlike the palm browser.
SO yes they do satisfy what I am looking for and as I said my main concern is reliability and application stability. I have read negative reviews about all the models. Dont want mine to crash every once in a while or get bricked. Warranty is a privilege I dont like exercising.

@nuke - will do

O2 is a excellent device but only draw back its low on storage. I dont have much Knowledge about voice recording on these devices though. It also looks sexy.

Texas Instrument processor based devices are slow compared to their

Intel ARM processors in the mobile domain.I have used all the windows Mobile devices. Every device comes with soft and hard reset button.you can easily reset or restore the os settings.Unless you do something wrong like flashing and switching off in between update,I dont see them getting bricked .

I have never used Palm devices. At 312 MHZ, Palm |TX can be bit slow when u start using it . I suggest u go for one with a higher processor speed in palm if its available.

The HP New model device is has the highest processor speed and has good ram.

I suggest u try out these devices before making up your mind.

If you want to go for windows mobile ,I would recommend o2 for looks

and HP for Performance .

I have never encountered crashing of windows Mobile Os expect while running my written programs :P

Get the Motorola M1000 if you can. Does everything you want and runs Opera :D Oh..it retails for around $300 in the USA (unlocked version). And its a cellphone too.

Raghu.

well i think moto 1 is slow...but i never used it......

btw....get any but make sure u take warranty one

If you can afford it, go for OQO otherwise I would suggest go for a mobile phone with wifi connectivity and the features you require, I searched for available quad band mobile phones that have wifi and office got 29 results. Mostly O2/Eten/I-mate/HP.

Given your choices, mine would be HP hx2490. It's definately superior.

Thats a great device but I am afraid I cant afford that. I would rather go for a 10" laptop. Thanks for the result page link.

My budget cannot go beyond 25K incl taxes. :hap5:

Even I thot 2490 was best but the 4GB microdrive on lifedrive and the 4inch 320X480 screen is irresistible too. :P

i am 100% satisfied with Imate Jam. Available in black edition. dealer price 26k. expensive but tough n robust built quality. my cell fell down on tarmac road from my hand and got minot scratches n bruises on the silver body. and i thought my cell was dead cause when it fell, rear cover open, battery came out loose, mem card jumped out. and when i switched on, came back to normal. so the built quality & robustness matters in PDA. that was the worst shock day of my life when i saw my cell rolling/jumping down the tarmac road 4-5 times

Points noted. Getting bricked was referring to the fact that people report that their PDA just switched off while charging or working and did not start. Also the Palm batteries are not user replaceable.

O2 XDA Atom/HP iPAQ rw6828 FTW :) ~ 25K

^^ Both are basically the same!
I cant find the rw6826 on the HP India site. The O2 atom seems like a deal if I can discount the fact that it has a 2.7in screen. Though it is a phone and has 2MP camera.

All the help is appreciated. :cool2: Still looking...

palm tx and lifedrive are good. palm tx has NV ram meaning you dont loose data when you do a reset. it has excellent battery life and you will never notice the processor being slow. it will handle all movies mp3 etc with no problems.

The life drive has some lag when launching apps from the hardrive.

The Tx can use a 4gb sd card.

the apps available for the palm platform outnumber the windows mobile ones even third party office programs are supposed to be better than pocket word etc!!

also i have had excellent service from palm. You just have to send the palm to singapore and they turn it around in 2 days by DHL!!

Pocket PC has more features and i feel more value for money. Though i haven't used them.

You may like to look at the sharp zaurus which has usb host capability.

Dude, I have a unused (almost) ipaq 6315 up for sale..interested?

Runs Win Mobile OS, Has a great screen, wifi, GSM, BT but a sucky camera....

How about this cheap ass phone - Voq, I guess from Sierra Wireless, has Windows, so installing pocket office should not be a problem, has SD card, so you can add wifi too.. Voice recorder already built in... not a bad 'jugad' for 5K ;-)
