Need info on gas geysers

Are you referring to pipeline based LPG network or the cylinder? Not sure how economic it's to install a gas based water heater on LPG but the system turns out to be very effective on CNG.

Here in Gujarat, where CNG is a very cheap and effective fuel, most people seem to prefer this heater over solar based systems esp. in flats wherein space on the terrace is very limited. The unit is very compact and can be installed outside the bathroom or inside and gives instant hot water. This unit cannot be a storage-type water heater as there's no reservoir having coils wherein water is stored compared to conventional electric geysers.

PS: The title could have done with a single question mark!

^Not sure if the water heater can take a LPG cylinder - couple of quick questions:

- Where will you install this unit? Not inside the bathroom so think about this!

- Will the place be sufficient to house the cylinder?

- How often will you keep replacing the cylinder? This would depend on the daily usage. I can give you an approx. figure on the consumption.

Arent there heat pump based water heaters available? They are easily 3-4 times as efficient compared to regular electric heaters. I doubt LPG running costs are 1/4th of electric heaters.

If the primary reason you are looking at LPG based heater is because of irregular electricity supply (like in Bangalore for instance), then it wont work. If cost is the primary consideration, then I would urge you to look at heat pump based models.

Gas geysers are very efficient.Running cost is also low ( 1 cylinder for 3.5 months )

I am using it with LPG cylinder for more than 4 years.

Only problem is that it requires dedicated cylinder. I don't know whether it is used with gas pipe connection.

hmm. my uncle is using one of these lpg based heaters from 4 years or so. I think one lpg cylinder lasts about 45-50 days or so for 4 people in home.

And I've seen the unit can run on the piped connection too. So it can be upgraded /downgraded as required. And it was kept in the bathroom, and is quite small and pretty safe to use too.

Me thinking of getting one but it costs around 4-6k I think.

I was using one till last week. Now I am on a Solar.

My views on LPG geyser: Not too economical. Troublesome for a largish family. (We are 4 adults and a 1 year old in the house).

Interestingly its pretty easy to use, I actually loved the interface with the temperature display and ability to select amount of hot/cold water, level of flame etc.

We have it running at our house for 2 years now. Everything is fine just as long as there is very good ventilation. (clearance at the top exhaust vent)

Why dont you use Solar Heater. The initial investment is there but there after min maintenance.( 0 Paisa )
I had previously installed Gas Gyser. It works great but nothing compared to Solar Water heater.

Hi

I am using LPG based heater for more than 7 years, here are some observations.

1. very very cheap as compared to electric gas geyser.

2. We are 5 adults and 1 kid family and still it goes for 40-45 days. Electricity bill with electric geyser used to have 1800-2000 rupees, after gas geyser installation it was 400-600.

3. Safe till now we don't have any leakage problem or any ignition problem.

4. Need to replace battery once in a year.

What precaution need to take.

keep cylinder and unit outside (free space) as much as possible.

If it's in bathroom itself, be sure u have ample ventilation or fit one exhaust fan.

I have fitted in one bathroom and carried same pipe to another. So that I can use it from both.

Do note that use of subsidised LPG cylinders for non-cooking purposes is illegal. Please dont use subsidised LPG cylinders in geysers.

Unsubsidised LPG is almost as costly as electricity geysers. I do not know CNG rates though.

Also use of LPG/CNG geysers in poorly ventilated bathrooms has lead to several deaths.

LPG water heaters blamed for a dozen Bangalore deaths

So please be very careful with the installation.
