A friend of mine needs a gfx card for research purposes

He uses VTK heavily (it uses opengl), medical imaging, virtualization....so will the usual 7600gt is a good choice or are there specialized cards with hardware optimizations for that sort of work?

quadro cards will do the job. leadtek makes good quadro cards but they are costly. but u can buy a 6 series gpu card and with riva tuner u can convert it into quadro card.

All mid/highend Nvidia desktop cards on Windows are 100% compatible and have known to have passed all VTK tests.

You may by all means settle for 7600GT...

dude stating the obvious aren't ya?? leadtek is also the only vendor here making nvidia's quadro chipset based cards. Besides as vij said I don't think soft modding a regular Geforce will help.

If he must have a quadro I don't think he'll need one of the higher end ones. I suggest a 980xgl or a FX550 or FX700 at the most...
