As the sad state of affairs have been - I have been gaming on a 21'' CRT for long time. Hated it but dint have any choice - no moolah/EMI options (not a big fan of CC spending). My new job has a generous joining bonus and thinking of spending it on upgrading.

Going per the prescribed format
1. Budget. 30-35k

2. Viewing distance. 6-10feet

3. Sources/inputs such as HD DTH/consoles/stand-alone media players etc.
Videocon DTH (composite input) and Xbox 360 (will buy a HDMI cable for it)

4. Preference for plasma TV/LCD TV/LED-LCD TV.
AFAIK LEDs and LCDs are almost same other than that one has LED backlighting in it. So shouldn't really matter if the viewing angles are good.

5. Preference for brands.
None though a native playback of avi/mkv is required (from ahem sources)

6. Willing to purchase it from the grey market? Depends, if the options are good. Though not aware of the market in Bangalore

7. Ambient lighting conditions of the room.
Decent lighting. The LED might have windows behind it and the tubelight just opposite to it. Might create glare issues?

8. Any other feature you are looking for such as 3D support on the HDTV, DLNA capabilities etc.
Nope. I can always add android stick later

Bought LG 32ls5700 for 32k. Got IPS panel with many connectivity options (4hdmi + 4usb+lan etc) and average smart features. Might get android stick to increase the smartness and connectivity. Currently it is wifi ready aka LG wants to extort 2k more for a wifi device for the extra connectivity

Just wanted to highlight this as IMO, this repeated over the forums. I have checked Panny and LG (no Sony, as I feel nowadays their products are a bit costly for the functionalities it provides) models before deciding on my current TV. One of the inhibitons I had taking non-Samsung brand was avi/mkv playback. I found both company models capable of handling such files. After recieving the TV, I have been constantly experimenting and found the LG model to be able to handle many formats (not AVI, MKV etc rather scene DVDRIP, BRRIP, BDRIP etc :P) perfectly fine.

Glad that it does because previously LG used to suck at this. It was a mixed bag - the video plays fine when the audio is muted, not able to choose a select soundstream (such as DTS/AC3) etc.

Has LG improved the user interface or is still the kindergarten type with cheesy fonts and lags while browsing through the contents? :P

With the improved so-called "DIVX HD" certified devices, till the video is encoded with a profile which DIVX can handle it works fine. If you get your hands on the non-scene encoded videos, say those 300MB/400MB compressed mkvs it will be a problem. Haven't checked changing the soundstream though:oops:

Not sure what kind of fonts they had previously but they look a bit cheesy. :) 10-15 files in one folder works fine without lag. Using YT is a pain, the keyboard is hopelessly laggy. Thankfully, they allow pairing, so I can search videos on my phone/tablet and send it to my TV. Not really intitutive but works great.

That's a deal breaker! Did you check it thoroughly? I happened to discover the option on my 2010 Samsung model when I browsed through the tools, options menu.

What I meant by stream selection - if the media file has a DTS/AC3 sound stream, the player selects the default pseudo 5.1 channel surround. The user has to manually select the stream to enable it.

Yeah I understand. I retried it just now, seems the file got corrupted while copying first time. I had downloaded a harry potter mkv sample with dual audio - hindi and english. I could easily switch between them using option called audio channel 1/2. So i guess soundstream option should work in a similar manner. The idiotic thing is you need the video to be playing at the time of change, if you try pausing and changing option is greyed out.
