Galvanizer
hello,

I already have 4 gigs of transcend RAM, but I am planning to upgrade to 8 gigs. Now, I have 2 options:

1) Get 2x2GB transcend RAM and add it to my existing RAM config

2) Get 2x4GB RAM and transfer the existing 4GB RAM to another computer that I have

Now, MY questions are:

1) if I go the first route, can I just buy 1x4GB RAM from ANY brand and pop it in? will it work?

2) No question for the second option.

Now, I also need suggestions as to where to buy the RAM from? I live in Delhi and I have no problems in online shopping whatsoever. I have been a bit out of the loop since I upgraded my PC some 3 years ago and a lot has changed over here dealer wise.

I have the Asus M4A78T-E motherboard that supports 1333 MHZ/1600MHZ(OC) RAM. Rest of the config in the signature and below is the link to my mobo: I'd appreciate it if you guys could visit the link and have a look at the mobo. Thanks

http://www.asus.com/...A78TE/#overview

Right now I am looking at:

Corsair Vengeance: http://www.flipkart....m>-979363be17a9

Also, could anybody tell me the difference between these two RAMS: Both are Gskill ripjaws but have a difference of Rs. 150 and I cant see any difference in the CAS latency

http://www.flipkart....m>-979363be17a9

and

http://www.flipkart....m>-979363be17a9

I can go to other brands if you guys suggest. The only thing is that I am gonna be overclocking my CPU and RAM in a couple of months as my 720BE has started showing its age. This brings to my second question. What CPU cooler should I be using? Can my proccy go to 3.4 GHz easily? I have a cooler master 310 elite case. Here is the link

http://www.flipkart....ae-3ef1617815f4

The cooler must be over the air and not liquid cooling based as I wont be able to spend more than 2500 on it. For RAM, budget is around 3500 but its flexible if the RAM deserves it.

So, please make sure that my new cooler does not get obstructed because of the RAM. If you wanna know, I am gonna be upgrading my GPU and cabinet in the next few months (as soon as 7870 touches the 15K mark)

So, to make a long story short, I need RAM and CPU cooler/or processor if the cooler aint worth it.

Also, I have attached the ASUS QVL list (RAM compatibility with the mobo, if it makes any difference. Let me know if I missed something and please keep the suggestions flowing. Thank you

I'd say go for the new Gskill RipjawsX 2X4gb 1600mhz-3.5k,The Gskill RipjawsX have better heat spreaders hence they're costlier than the other one you've mentioned in the link. This ram is compatible with your mobo.

For the cooler go for Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo-2.1k with this you can easily get the result of 4.0ghz ocing.http://www.theitware...oler-p-537.html

Okay it comes down to these 3: All the prices are from FK

RipjawsX ~ 3000

http://www.flipkart.com/g-skill-ripjawsx-ddr3-8-gb-2-x-4-gb-pc-ram-f3-12800cl9d-8gbxl/p/itmd2rysqgrmywpa?pid=RAMD2RYRAZDXEMNE&_l=dV5SMbi0oDnC+xrE9hcQIQ--&_r=Yoya4UbGz_+jAZKh12Exfw--&ref=cf9cdae8-8077-45fb-aecc-721ad2bc5b3b

Gskill sniper - 3616

Corsair Vengeance - ~3500:

Now Sniper and RipjawsX are exactly the same except one major difference : 1.25V vs. 1.5V respectively for 1600MHz.

Now, I have never OC'd, but how does this translate into better OCbility? Do you mean, at 1.5V sniper would run at a higher clock rate than Rip or something else? Do't forget that my mobo does not support more than 1600MHz for RAM (at which, they both are running by default, meaning I cant go higher anyways). Also, when I do OC my processor, would I NEED to OC my RAM too or 1600 MHz will see my processor to ~3.8 GHz on CM hyper 212 evo? I am kinda sold for this cooler. Its the best in the price range.

  1. It is the other way around, the RIPJAWS perform better SNIPER modules are poor over-clockers, one of our TE members has done a review for the same. The SNIPER modules are more efficient and perform well @1600MHz while taking in only 1.25 volts of power. Here is the review done by our member.
  2. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is the best cooler you can get in the sub ~2500/- price-band, and you need not over-clock your RAM with the processor, also please note when installing this third party cooler on your processor, you will need to RE-TIM the processor if you are unsure how to do it read these articles #1 and #2. Their only caveat is that they cannot change orientation on an AMD RIG, they have a fixed North <--> South orientation that can be a little of an issue, but nothing major, go for the Cooler I have personally used it and vouch for the same.
  • I suggest that you go for the G.Skill RIPJAWS or SNIPER modules because the heat-spreader is of better design and will not interfere with your Hyper 212 EVO cooler.
  • Over-clock better than the Corsair Vengeance and finally have an okay-okay service network in most major metros.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

all righty thanks for the suggestions #[member='ALPHA17'] and #[member='JuGGa'], According to reviews, OC ing the RAM is next to worthless. So, I am gonna go with RipjawsX (cheaper, fits with evo, and is RED...)

Now, what about the warranty? How is it compared to Corsair in Delhi? Also, are the prices really lowest on Flipkart for these RAMs? kinda surprising...

Hmmm... that is where we hit sticky patches with G.Skill I am not aware of their RMA service centres / providers as well as whether the shops from where you bought the same [RAM modules] are willing to do a over-the-counter trade and replace your faulty modules.

I have a suggestion, visit Nehru Place, enquire for the pricing of the following RAM kits --
  • G.Skill RIPJAWS / RIPJAWS X [also enquire about RMA and after sales]
  • Corsair XMS3
  • Corsair Vengeance LP [Low Profile]

whichever offers you the best prices as well as good RMA cover, buy that.

Here is the RMA page for G.Skill. And these here are the official resellers of the same in India, get in touch with them and inquire about the RMA procedure and turn-around time.

Corsair RMA is done by Kaizen Infotech and they are in good standing with most members and turn-around time is generally within a week, all dependent on what you are replacing.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Thanks # alpha17.....I'll do that... Also forgot to ask this...what tim should I use? The best...price no issue..

Well the best catalogue of TIM's I have seen on any Indian site is here.

Out of the contenders present the best in my views should be --
  • Arctic Silver 5 ~550/-
  • Tuniq TX-3 ~350/-

For a review on thermal pastes, head here also read this article as well.

Another wild card entry is the SVG Thermag V-1, it is said to be Shin-Etsu MicroSi G751 which is the best OEM TIM around, so you can go for that as well.

Seems like the Arctic Silver-5, Tuniq TX-3 and the Shin-Etsu paste come pretty close to each other, read here.

Product site for the Shin-Etsu thermal paste.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Okay, I received my RAM and the cooler today. I installed the RAM, and found it running at 11-11- and not 9-9- like its supposed to be according to CPU-Z and AMD's powerdrive. Am sorry, am at work, screenshots will follow when I get home. Do I need to make any changes on my system?
