Hi,

As the title says, I need to purchase a P&S digicam.

Priorities are good quality pics. Even if its not that compact that would be ok. It will mostly be used for group pics and stuff, so a wide-angle will be preferable.

So what are my options?

I am planning to sell my Panasonic Lumix TZ7, bought less than a year ago. Sparingly used. 25mm wide angle lens, 12x Optical Zoom, 720p HD Recording Capability with Optical Zoom.

I've been thinking about it, but haven't been too sure since I'm planning to buy a dSLR now.

If in any case you're interested, we can work out a good price in your range :)

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 / ZS3 review: design, controls, lens, stabilisation, screen, menus, drive modes | Cameralabs

The Camera is in perfect working condition and comes bundled with an 8GB Class 6 Memory Card. Literally scratch-less, have been using a screen guard since the moment I purchased the camera.

^^^Sibot: This ones going to be a company purchase, so no second hand stuff.

We also need good quality video recording with the cam.

Looking at Canon models, 2 that I see interesting WITH Wide-angle + 720p video recording are the IXUS 120 IS and the IXUS 130, both within our budget.

Any other suggestions?

24-25mm is the most you'll get on a compact P&S. As for 720p video recording, do keep in mind that Canon doesn't allow Optical Zoom while recording.

Check out the YouTube videos for a better idea on how the video quality would be. I'm not sure if those models have Stereo Sound or Mono, but Stereo would be better. As for the picture quality of Canon goes, its uber, so you can't go wrong there. BUT, its always better to check out reviews and most of all first-hand user reviews on websites like Amazon, to get a better perspective on what other novice users are saying.

You can also check out Nikon, not sure if they have 720p in this range though.

To get a better idea on the focal length of the camera, to see how wide the lens would be, here's a great tool

Both these IXUS are 28mm+

The 25mm IXUS is 18k+, so out of budget. I am aware of the zoom limitation. No alternative to that I guess. Will look up some of the reviews, but this seems the best option. Lets see if there are any other good suggestions...

I heard Sony WX1 is available for 12k in some grey market. review

No grey market. Need official stuff with bill/warranty and all.

EDIT:

Interesting suggestion though. Its 15k @ MRP, so can buy. + its got a 24mm lens, so pretty much the widest I can get in this range. Its 10MP instead of the 12/14 of the Canon, but I think this should be good.

Any suggestions on how its image quality is compared to the Canons?

Don't get deceived by the high mgpx, its counter productive when they try to squeeze in more pixels in a small sensor.

Sony has always had good quality photographs, especially during night time and low light. Plus the WX1 is using the G series lens, which is much better than normal P&S Carl Z. lenses.

While the Canon takes some beautiful shots too, I'd consider Sony as a worthy competitor, although the best thing to do would be to check out the reviews.

I get the MegaPixel myth, just reading some reviews I was getting the feeling that the Canon may have better picture quality as compared to the Sony...
