I am building a new house so i am getting the whole place networked. Now the time has come to lay the wires. I need the approximate cost for the Cat 5 and Cat 6 cables(Per Meter). Also which company's cables to look out for.

TIA

Switch

P.S. Also putting Cat 6 over Cat 5 is a good idea or not :P

well, you will find three types of cables in market

1]Cat5

The normal network cable, cheap but not the best. Avoid this one. They become hard in a year or two time and then the internal wire can break even on at 270 degree turn. Sells for 12/mtr.

2]STP Cat 5 (Cat5e)

This is the high quality Cat 5 cable with shielding given. They sells for 24/mtr. Cat5 and Cat5e are used for 100mbps network. for a gigabyte network, use cat 6, since they have a higher bandwidth. SNR in cat5 sux a lot.

3]Cat 6

For a long term usage and reliability, nuthin beats cat 6. but since copper prices have risen, they are selling for around 30 Rs/Mtr. Also, they have a thick plastic wire running between the 8 wires, which prevents it to break at sharp turns. ask any network admin, they will say, that its difficult to setup a cat 6 network, since they are very difficult to bend and crimp.

We have just setup a gigabyte lan within a small section in office, and we are witnessing a speed of 45MBps+. This is also due to HDD speed limitation. This was possible with cat6 and giga-switch.

I did enquire about STP Cat6, as theoritically, they are suppose to be the best with lowest errors. But they are not avialable anywhere..

don't know the extact price of cables as I am a 'server guy', don't have to do cabling stuffs.

But, go for one and only D-LINK cables with D-LINK RJ-45 jacks with any back cover with D-LINK Wall Mount Face-Plates (this one is really expensive).

CAT6 is not at all needed. Believe me (hope you will). My house is of 4 floors. It is a old house so by calcualtion it is actually a 5 floor house. we are in g-floor and 3rd-floor. 2 network segment in each floor (3 PCs and 2 PCs). a simple d-link Cat 5 is the connector between them (g-floor to 3rd-floor).

I can't go for WI-FI setup. Our old house has such a thick wall that even we don't get mobile signal unless it is in front any window :(

BTW: why don't you make it WI-FI house ?

^^ i dont think switch will have a budget. & also since he is going to be moving in a new house he will go for whatever is the best.

Lets just say i know a tiny miny bit about networking :P... And i do know the difference between Cat 5 and Cat 6...

So you guys suggesting me Cat 6.... Will keep that in my mind... Also thanks a ton evilution... I will keep that in my mind... Stormy... Budget is a constraint... Making a house takes a lot out of you :P... Eventually i will setup my house as Wifi only... Doing networking of few rooms and not all :P...

Thanks for the suggestions guys...

The bare minimum for any new house is to get a network connection near the TV output for HTPC and Gaming Console. Current Wi-Fi standards cant support that kind of bandwidth needed for streaming Hi-Def content from your main PC.

If you really wanna future proof your house, then it is advised to get a network cable to every switch box and near windows and doors. This will take care of home automation systems also.

For home automation, look into X10 products. I have no idea whether they're available here or even if they're compatible with our systems. Just have a look.
P.S. - X10 is a standard, not a brand.
