I know this not the best place to ask this question, many of u will thing what the hell is this question doing on tech forum :bleh:. but here it goes

My uncle is building a hostel and the steps of stairs are made of granite and they are really slippery.one other guy has the same stone on stairs and each week 2-3 person slips and falls, even once a girl slipped( around 11 pm) and went unconscious for a hour and no one noticed her at last the got back and went to the warden.
so we were thinking for getting some anti slip coat or any other solutions, i checked google and found some website selling anti slip coat for floors but can't find anyone in india.
so anyone have any knowledge about these stuff?
I think there must be some solution in india it, but even he is ready to import the stuff.

I have seen granite steps with a rough surface just at the edge of the step to avoid slipping.

yeah my uncle thought of it and told the builder to put small strips of stone to prevent slipping but the idiot didn't did that and the granite has been fixed now on the stairs.

best would be to put some low cost heavy duty carpet in middle of the steps for time being till you get a permanent solution. maybe sticking the carpet with some good double sided tape like the 3M one will prevent it from moving on the granite. Also the tape can be removed without harming the granite if required.

You can also use anti slip tape, something like these --> google Images. I have seen these being used in the malls but don't think will last you forever and might need change every few years.

For your info, these come in glow in the dark type too and will aid aid the person using the stairs in the dark or when there is a power failure.

by any chance.. does anyone ever cleans the stair case?

alternatively,

2-3 lines need to be carved on each granite step in order to allow some grip.

are the ones in your area smooth plain without any carvings?

How about having the top layer of the granite grinded down? Once the top layer is removed, it reveals a rough surface that is surely anti slip. You could get this done in sections, it surely wouldn't look good, but it would def save lives and reputation of the hostel.

OR

Get anti-slip tiles and get the stairs tiled.

call a granite polisher and he will roughen the top part of it or make lines in it to make it non slip

err no... do not make t rough..

the problem will worsen.

rough granite is a good substrate for algae and will lead to greater issue for people.

just get two horizontal lines carved on each step closer to the edge.. this is ggood enough to get a grip on your foot-ware and it is practiced by most granite workers while doing granite staircases..

i will post pics in a few hours to point out what carving i mean to say.

As Op said the staircase is indoor Algae should not be a problem.

You can get a Granite polisher and can ask for a medium grain polishing instead of the usual mirror finish polish used for Granite. Also carving 2 lines would solve your problem.

ok, consulted an architect .......... options are :

1) Get the Granite Flame Finished / Sand Blasted.

2) Screw Aluminium Strips Giving Gap.

3) Granite Strips

4) Last & Simple one, Make 6mm Groves giving Gaps.

Thanks guys for your time. most obvious solution is either grain or putting strips.

by any chance.. does anyone ever cleans the stair case?

Just by brushing the dust, and rarely cleaned with water.
