SOmeone I know wants to do some kinda certification which would be helpful career wise.
That person had singled out Oracle OCA DBA. What I wanna know is what are the prospects after that and what can be expected out of it.

Also if you peeps can chalk out an alternate (certification/computer-course) path in the IT field then that would be really helpful. The important thing is that that should be manageable part-time and should be the in-thing.

My sis did an Oracle OCA DBA and she got a job in the software division of the TCI.Although she's also a BE E&TC but the DBA sort of helped her to get a good start in the IT field. So its a good option..You can even go for VB.net as it is very much in demand nowadays. :)

As for certification, first thing that ur friend must decide is the stream. If its h/w or s/w. If it is s/w then if he/she wants to become a DBA or a System Programmer or Application Designer etc. For H/W, N/W as well as S/W, there are different certification courses. Thus, its best to be a master of one and then proceed with mastering others rather than being Jack of all and master of none.

Of it is to be master of one which is why I asked for a path, complete path and prospects.
And it has to be mainly software.

Does your friend plan to study further or go in for a job?

If its going in for a job, then this is the right time for doing certifications like MCSE, CCNA, Oracle DBA Certification etc.

Otherwise, i would suggest that ur friend appears for the certifications in the last 6 months of the course he plans to persue.

But he really needs to decide which side wud better serve his profile as MCSE,CCNA etc are Networking certifications and Oracle, .Net etc are software certifications. If his current job is related to h/w then he shud definitely go for MCSE/CCNA etc. or if related to s/w industry then he shud think about DBA..its no point in being jack of all trades..

Well it has to be only software.. :P
ANd no not jack of all trades which is why I asked for a path and not just any one good certification. :)
So the DBA path is good I guess from what I have heard. Dont want to advise something and then feel guilty about it. :P
