Guys,

I want to know how to protect my laptop/system from threats/hijack/viruses or whatever, what are the softwares i need to install other than Antivirus softwares.

As my windows7 is genuine, i installed Microsoft Security Essentials in my laptop. I'm hearing Spyware or malware etc. Im pretty confused about these.

Suggest me what are the other softwares that i need to install to protect from all these kinds of threats? or Is MSE only enough?

I have been using MSE and the pre-installed windows firewall for about 2.5 years now. No virus and malware. You should be all set.

If you are a careful user, block all inbound connections and allow all outbound connections on firewall. Add exceptions when required.

If you think others will use your computer as well, block all inbound and outbound by default. Add exceptions as necessary.

Also, keep UAC turned on.

Sorry to ask you, im not much aware these terminologies. What is UAC and how can i turn it on?

Thanks Buddy for the clarification. It is on in my laptop by default. By the way, can u give some examples for inbound and outbound connections. So that i can cross check whether they are in desired state.

It depends on the programs you have on your computer and how you use them.

For example, something like iTunes.

If you only use iTunes to load music onto your music player, turn off inbound and outbound.

If you use iTunes to load music and download music, turn off inbound, keep outbound on.

If you use iTunes to load music, download music and also want to connect to iTunes remotely (from your phone or another computer), turn on inbound and outbound.

Another example.

If you want FileZilla (FTP program) to download files - turn on outbound.

If you want to run FileZilla to run as a server (so others can download files from your computer - turn on inbound.

As you are already using mse, i would suggest install ma lwarebytes anti malware and sandboxie.every month microsoft provides a malicious software scan along with windows updates.run these and you will be fine.also be prudent while surfing online and don't click any suspicious link.also microsoft has disabled auto run in windows7, but be careful anyway while using shared usb drives.if you download files from the net, do so from sources that are trusted and always check the hash.follow these steps amd you won't be caught unawares.
