Need suggestions for building a decent rig

Hi,

Before askign for suggestions, I would like to describe what i'm looking for. I looking for building a CPU only not wholesome rig. For initial months 3-4 months, I'll be using this PC only for studies. I'll be installing VMware ESX and running about 4-5 VMs, once done with my exams, I'll be converting this to my mainstream desktop. As of now, I just want to go for a i5 k processor/motherboard/cabby/power/processor fan. Also, I need the build to be ready by mid-april. Do you guys think, Ivy Bridge would be out by then and if yes, would it be available at same price or it would be costly? Does it makes sense to wait for it? As I have read everywhere, performace increase is 5-10%, would it matter much? Can someone just simplify the technical advantages over Sandy. Do let me know, if I can get the stuff mentioned below within this budget or need to increase?

  • Q: What is your budget?
    • 35k (can stretch to 38k)
  • Q: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)
    • Doesn't matter as building a new CPU itself.
  • Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)
    • Monitor - 20" Dell 2009W
    • 1TB WD HDD
    • Gskill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (4x2) - Didn't purchase, friend gifted me as he got 2 from USA and didn't need one.
    • DVD Drive/Keyboard/Mouse
  • Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.
    • CPU - Intel Core i5 2500k
    • Motherboard - Can't decide, if someone could suggest a decent board which can overclock and also has a onboard video, as I won't be going for a GFX card at this moment. But would go for one in next 3 months.
    • Coolermaster Hyper 212+ (Originally had planned for H60 but after reading too many leak stories on forums, got scared)
    • Corsair Carbide 400R or any equivalent or cheaper Cabby with similar spacious features and cable management
    • Corsair GS600 (Before suggesting anything over, please consider that I plan to purcahse a GFX (8k budget) in near future (3months)
    • One more RAM - Gskill F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL (4x2) or 8x1 if no compatibility issues with 2 4GB DIMM and 1 8GB DIMM. Planning to go for 16GB, would that help or not needed?
  • Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component
    • Graphics Card in next 3 months. Haven't decided which one, if possible suggest. Budget would be about 6k-8k(max)
  • Q: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)
    • Bangalore (SP Road)
    • Online as well, if getting a cheaper options.
  • Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market
    • No
  • Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
    • Studies (primary use)
    • Running VM Sessions of Linux based OS
    • Gaming (secondary)
    • Watching HD movies
  • Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.
    • No dislike as not aware of anything, just want something good.
  • Q: If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?
    • FPS Shootout ones
    • Racing - Grid at medium to high settings
  • Q: What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage
    • Gaming - 1280x728
    • Desktop - 1440x900
  • Q: Are you looking to overclock?
    • Yes
  • Q: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?
    • Initially ESX Server (Linux Based)
    • Once done with studies, Windows 7 64Bit.

@carelesswinds

Adding some points-

1) I don't think adding another 8GB of RAM would help proportionally.

2) For graphics card, This- Sapphire 7750.

3) You not need more than CM hyper 212 evo if you aren't willing to push i5-2500k more than 4.5GHz or close to 5GHz.. Its a fantastic cooler

4) Also, i5-2500k has Intel HD3000 which is very good to take care of your more than mild gaming & HD needs.
