Hi,

So far I have been using Ethernet Cable. I currently have a desktop and plan to soon upgrade to another desktop. The thing is this time the new desktop is being taken to another room. I do not want to re-rote the wiring of the internet cable. Hence plan to upgrade to a WiFi option.

Looking for the ideal router to be able to access the internet. The distance between the router and my desktop is expected to be about 35-40 feet with 2 walls in between. Would I able to still connect the desktop?

Also trying to understand how do I connect the desktop to the router? Should I buy a motherboard with WiFi or an external Wireless USB adapter?

I am not particularly concerned about budget - more so since I dont know what sort of a router will fulfill my requirements. Need your inputs / suggestions on this friends.

Thanks !!

Please mention your ISP, Location!

As you are sure you are using an Ethernet cable (RJ45 pin) that the ISP has provide you with.

If that is the case you can get a router without the modem.
A wide variety to choose from here

You can use a 150Mbps or a 300Mbps Modem, depending upon what budget your into. You can connect the Ethernet cable to the port mentioned as WAN/Cable port. Please refer the manual. the port will be highlighted with a different colour.

Depending on your ISP configure your router and enable Wireless LAN.

For Desktop1, you can continue in wired mode with another ethernet cable or install a wireless adapter for this too.

On Desktop2 which is in another room you can connect using either the internal wireless adapter (NIC Wireless type) or USB wireless adapter. Install the necessary drivers and it should easily detect the available network.

Thanks for the reply. I use CIES Internet in Andheri (Mumbai). And I just googled the RJ45 Pin - that is the exact pin that goes into the back of my CPU in the Lan input on the motherboard.

Also realized that I was slightly unclear in my original post. I am going to be discarding the existing desktop. Therefore there is no question of wired mode for internet. There will only be one desktop which is going to be in another room. The ethernet wire will be another room.

So if I read your post correctly this is what i should do right?
1. Get a router and plug the Ethernet cable into the router and I do not need a modem.
2. For desktop 2 can i get a motherbboard with onboard WiFi? Planning to buy the Asus P8Z77-V series motherboard. They specify that they have onboard WiFi. Will that work?

Thanks.

You need to get a Router without a Modem.
My Choices,
TP-LINK 300Mbps Wireless N | Router | Flipkart.com (300Mbps)
TP-LINK 150Mbps Wireless N White | Router | Flipkart.com (150Mbps)

It does not make a big difference whether you use a 150Mbps or a 300Mbps one.
So get the Router and configure your Router accordingly and activate the Wireless LAN option on the router. All details of how to enable is clearly mentioned on the Manuals.

As for Desktop2, the Asus MB website does mention there is a WiFi Module so it should work fine and automatically detect the settings.
Oh on that note, you can better motherboards at that price and add a USB wireless adapter to the MB!

Compare Router/Modem price with Shopclues too before buy from any site. There was Rs.300/- discount.
