Hello everyone!

yet another thread on ever-so-same query! pardon me for that, but going thread-after-thread has only resulted in me becoming more confused, and hence i seek some specific answers. i'll try to be systematic in my write-up below. please go through and suggest me something accordingly.

# Net-plan i have - MTNL Trib DSL Unltd 999
# Modem i possess - 450TC1 recently acquired from MTNL, which am planning to surrender
# Place of stay - Thane
# Area to be covered - single-floor house; everything to be covered well under 30ft of radius.
# My usage-needs - a) P2P/torrents
b) occasionally using wifi to use internet on 2 laptops kept in separate rooms
c) use internet primarily with my desktop
e) streaming hd video content and audio content to my media players kept in the hall

now this is the first time i've jumped onto the wireless bandwagon. hence not much knowledgeable in this aspect, but have been devoting time since past few days to learn more.

i had started with the options of --> DLink 2750U & TP-Link TD-W8691ND :yes:
then someone suggested me --> Asus RT-N13U....i said wow! its even better :O
and then fiddling around on the net, my eyes fell upon --> Asus RT-N16 & Netgear WNDR3700 :hail:

and now i am totally :unsure:

* combo router (adsl+router) :

i came to know that TP-Link's W8691ND is better than DLink's 2750U, if one doesn't need the USB port of the latter specifically. DLink suffers from buggy firmwares and can't get you speeds beyond 150mbps.

* stand-alone router :

with this option (which i read is a better option than the above. isn't it so?!), i plan to purchase a modem like 410TC1, and couple it with, well?! that's what you have to suggest :p
i can't seem to decide between RT-N13U, N16, WNDR3700.

- i would like to have in-built torrent support.
- am not at all jittery about using ddwrt (thanks to dinjo and others!)
- i would like to have such a router which allows me to fiddle with itself extensively, be it through official or custom wares.

considering the above, would N16 / WNDR3700 be overkill for my requirements? if not, then which one of the two should i buy? i won't like to spend beyond 6k, but if its TOTALLY WORTH it, could extend by 500 or so. for the time being, am using deltapage's prices as reference, and i know i could get the routers cheaper locally.

please feel free to ask questions to let the discussion go on in full flow.

waiting for responses eagerly. thanks in advance!

Update

After some more reading, i am gradually coming to the conclusion that N13U would be apt and more than enough for my needs. moreover, the support-scene for this router is quite alive & kicking here, as well as many users of this router are present on this forum and elsewhere, so i trust i could take help, whereas not much exists on the N16 or the netgear model.

still, would welcome any suggestions :)

I am also thinking about this!!!

2750 isn't a very good router it can't really survive 24x7 for more than 4 days wifi starts disconnecting.

Having a cheap adsl modem + Asus rt n13u is the best combo.

How do you plan to stream movies to media players ? Since DLNA isn't that great if it's samba share then it's good.

Use a cheap ADSL modem and put it in bridge mode and let the ASUS N13 be in Router mode. This is the best way. Dont go for a ADSL router unless you are sure you wont change ISP to a non ADSL ISP.

thanks dinjo & vivek! even if your replies were towards babu's post, these are helpful to me too. 'manu1991', a fellow-member told me that TP-Link TD-W8691ND is a better ADSL router than 2750U if one doesn't need the USB functionality. but anyway, am not heading for the ADSL router way as it is.

could you please suggest me on these 2 specific points:

1. for my kind of usage (as outlined in the OP), i believe the N13U should suffice?! i trust that through ddwrt, downloading torrents through N13U is not a problem, isn't it? if there're issues, am open to N16 too. please suggest the better model for me.

2. would this modem work with the N13U / N16?!

If downloading is only need then these routers can't handle too much of load [It can handle 5 simultaneous running torrent i.e writing to HDD ], RT-N16 is good router but it does not suits your needs and the modem you posted will work.

i don't download those many torrents at a time. max 3-4, that too seldom. and thanks for pointing the right router and modem for me!
regarding your question (which i had overlooked earlier and saw just now), i don't know much about, since i didn't care much for it earlier having no wifi. but will explore now. the media player is Himedia HD900B, which says video could be streamed using gigabit ethernet and wifi, and states network options as samba, NFS, DLNA, UPnP.

bumping up an old thread!

- didn't buy any router at that time. now, requirements have slightly changed (filtered down), which are:

1. need a better range of wifi-signals.
2. torrent-DL support preferable.

- is the cheap modem + separate router (as N13U B1) option still one of the best combos i could go for? if yes, i would immediately bump up my old WTB-thread for N13U B1 as well right away!

- i don't intend to use the router to stream any content. if and when that's needed, i may think of some other alternative.

- the range-requirement is not so much as what some other users have, who wish to purchase a router.
the router could be placed at one end of a small corridor (pt. A), running approx. 5m. in length. considering that one stands at this end of pt. A, facing towards the other end of the corridor, there are 2 rooms on either side, and the router's sides would face the door-openings, so no worries about signal-strength in these 2 rooms.

further moving ahead in the corridor towards the end pt. B, at a distance of about 5m., there is one room on the left side, with an intervening wall of ~4 in. thickness. even with my current 450TC1 placed in one of the rooms beside pt. A, i get a feeble signal there in the room at pt. B. so i am sure with the new router placed at pt. A, i would get better signal in this room.

where the corridor ends, start the hall & the dining area (adjacent to each other, with no separation). i just want signal from the end of the corridor to extend just a couple of meters into these 2 areas, intercepting a 5 in. thick wall in between at the corridor's end, to about 7m. in total from pt. A. so effective radius of reach i would want from the router is 7m.

if its getting difficult to imagine, i would come up with a rough sketch of the area by tonight.

- apart from N13U B1, i have N12LX in mind. would've loved to get the W8968, but its a modem+router, and an ADSL2+ at that. since there's a high chance that i would be migrating to a LAN-based connection in near-future, i don't think getting a W8968 would make much sense. would prefer buying from the forum.

please suggest whether should be my choice.

thanks!

The N13 will still be a better choice and with the lowered rates, the difference between the N13 and the others is not too much.
