My motherboard was replaced under warranty. After that the installer applied some unbranded TIM. Getting idle temps of 55 and load temps of 85

Prime 95 touched 90 in less than 60 sec, then I shut it down

Probably a TIM issue

Now, my experience has been limited to replacing HDD's,RAM,etc

Need info on

  • How to remove the stock cooler (can find many installation videos, but not removal videos)
  • Which TIM should I use (NO overclocking, so something simple should be ok I guess): preferably something available on ebay, and cheap: is this a good one: http://www.ebay.in/itm/Cooler-Maste...0?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item231c5a445e ?
  • For old TIM cleaning: the cleaner thats needed: can it be bought online?
  • Is it safe to use it at 55-60 idle and 80-90 gaming temps for about 3 weeks or so, or should I stop gaming?

Not very difficult, just turn the push pins that you turned clockwise to lock onto the motherboard, in the anti-clockwise direction and pull the push-pin out. Do so on all four push-pins and the processor will be free.

I think the processor manual comes with the directions for removal as well, so do read it up.

It is decent, but over-priced on E-Bay, suggest you hunt for the same in the local market and save on cash.

For old TIM cleaning: the cleaner thats needed: can it be bought online?

Good old after-shave is good enough for the task, lack after-shave pilfer some alcohol. Anything that has a high alcohol content like --
  • after-shave
  • Brandy, Vodka, Rum
  • surgical spirit
  • nail polish remover

is game, just make sure it is not corrosive OR abrasive in nature, else might end up voiding your warranty.

Is it safe to use it at 55-60 idle and 80-90 gaming temps for about 3 weeks or so, or should I stop gaming?

Way too hot Sire, recommend you replace the stock TIM, clean the processor and reseat the heat-sink fan and apply a fresh coat of the alternative TIM.

Okay Sire, you need to reseat the stock HSF, after cleaning the old residue of the previous TIM. Where are you staying, depending on where you stay these are the TIMs I can recommend --
  1. Cooler Master HTK 002 ~125/- for 3.5 gm, baseline TIM that can be used, performance is okay to average. Nothing special but available all over the country and is relatively east to apply.
  2. Arctic Silver 5 ~550/- for 3.5gm. Pricey TIM known for its great performance, which improves once the TIM has set-in. If you are open to online purchase OR stay around major metros like, Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore and Hyderabad you can easily find this TIM.
  3. Tuniq TX-2 ~300/- for 3.5 gm. This TIM is my personal favourite, not to expensive and a great performer though must be replaced once in 6 -->8 months as it dries out after that time. Also it is exclusively available in Bangalore, though a few online shops might stock it too.

Also, if you are not to sure of how to apply TIM, refer the following guides --> http://www.techpower...icle.php?id=134 / http://www.bit-tech....all-about-tim/1.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Thx, I'll probably go for the HTK002 (around 190 on ebay)

For the cleaner: Is it available at Nehru place? Any recommended shop?(can get TIM from there as well I guess)

Am from Noida

If you can go to Nehru Place I think it will be better you come here and buy the same in person, it will be cheaper on price. Though I do agree transportation costs will come into play, you travelling to Nehru Place <--> Noida.

I already told you Sire, you can use anything in your household that has a high alcohol content instead of special cleaners --
  1. Aftershave, personal favourite of mine. If you are not using aftershave I think your father OR brother will not mind sharing a dab.
  2. Vodka, Rum, Brandy can also be used.
  3. Nail-polish remover can also be used.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Ah, will use aftershave then

Had opened your post before the edits, so didnt see the data you had added
<

Will probably order from ebay only then, doesnt make sense to go all the way to NP to save Rs 75

i5 stock cooler is insufficient , it runs around 90 at prime load at 35-40 ambient temps .. i have a chip which runs at similar temps even when best thermal compound is used . dont waste ur time removing and reinstalling cooler , it wont help much . get an aftermarket cooler . Though ur idle temp is slightly higher , idle will get lower applying better TIM , but it will result in max 5°C improvement at load i think..

If I can get gaming down below 80 after reTIMing, I guess I'll stick with stock

Otherwise, hows the CM Vortex 211P ? Cant find any reviews on it but seems to be the easiest one to install (No Overclocking at all, noise is also not a factor)

Problems with Vortex coolers is as follows --
  • Not really efficient in comparison with competing tower designs.
  • Need a strong air-current in peripheral areas of the cooler to effectively dissipate heat.
  • Due to the small form factor, really limited cooling is on tap.
  • Attaching multiple fans on the frame is an issue.

Advantages --
  • Small form factor, allows installation of expansive RAM modules.
  • Easy to install vis-a-vis tower coolers, often do not require a backplate to set-up.

Honestly the best bet for you is to get the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO ~2400/-, it is a tried and true design which has withstood the rigours of multiple generations of over-heating CPU's. For reviews head here --> http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/coolermaster-hyper-212-evo.html / http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/cooler_master_hyper_212_evo_cpu_cooler_review,1.html.

I agree after doing multiple reseat and re-TIM operations on my friends Sandy-Bridge processors [mostly the Core i5 family] I have drawn the following conclusion --
  • Intel's CPU's have progressed in leaps and bounds not so with the stock cooler.
  • The design is ineffectual at dissipating the heat.
  • AMD stock coolers maybe tiny and noisy but they do the job at the end of the day.

Thanks, will be bumping this in another 20 days when I get home and reapply TIM, but cannot really go for a cooler that requires a backplate. This would be the first time I'm even removing the HSF, dont want to experiment with removing the motherboard. Thats why I'm sticking to stock, or push pin based installs at most

Agreed, on my first run with its predecessor, the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ I spent 3+ hours figuring out how to place it on my AMD processor, in the end it is one of the easier coolers to install right now.

If you are really just wanting a push-pin based system take a look at the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 ~1100/-.

Not a monster cooler, but a better deal than the stock fan for sure. Here are a few reviews --> http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/coolermaster_hyper_tx3/ / http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/cooler_master_hyper_tx3_evo_cpu_cooler_review,1.html.

But let me remind you that the push-pin system is the biggest fault with the stock Intel HSF, due to insufficient force application due to this design. Try to reconsider the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO which will really ease your life.

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

Reapplied TIM, used the CM one from eBay

Temps are 80 under P95 (15 min) ,70 while gaming and 50 idle with 35-37 ambient, will continue with this only then (as it turns out, the guy who had replaced the old TIM hadnt cleaned the original intel TIM from the cooler, just from the processor)

So I concur you are satisfied with its performance, hope the RIG serves you well Akash, Cheerio!!
