Security Software Need to buy a Antivirus suite and some storage space !

Switch

Level G
Hey guys,

My KIS has expired and I need to buy a new suite. Should I continue using KIS or is there anything better in the similar price range. Have 3-4 machines which needs the solution.

Apart from that I need to buy some more storage space. Was eyeing the 2TB when the prices were 4K'ish but prices as of now have gone out of the roof due to the floods I believe. Need this storage space for my HTPC as it is already housing 1TB+1.5TB HDD. Was thinking about swapping the 1TB with a 2TB. But as of now I am holding off. When are the chances of prices going back to normal.

TIA

Switch

1. If you are on genuine Windows 7, the best AV you can install is the Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, light, and does an exceptionally good job.

2. HDD prices will take a few months to come back to normalcy. Better hold off your purchase until the new year, maybe even later than that.. :(

KIS is a very good suite no doubt and you can go for it if you prefer it

However i can recommend you an alternative free setup

Avira Free Antivirus 2012

and Comodo Free Firewall 5.8 (2012)

the only thing this setup is missing is the webguard which is available with Avira Antivirus (paid)

however you can enable the webguard in the free version too (it comes with a nasty ask toolbar)

you can disable the toolbar using some minor registry tweaks by yourself

this setup should be much much lighter than KIS on any system

and you will be getting a more effective and lighter(if properly configured) firewall

I'd say get MSE or Avast. The free version has sandboxing turned on by default. It also has webrep and site blocking. So you can block specific url's by adding them to it.

The paid version is $30 for 3 machines per yr. It has additional protection like full featured firewall, safezone, etc.

I use the free version from about 4-5 yrs and didnt feel the need to get any other AV other than this. Does the job perfectly.

the newest kaspersky(version 2012) has the best detection rates and proactive detection rates compared to all antiviruses.. including norton.. stick to KIS or else take norton 2012 or bitdefender.. Avast free is heavy on the system especially with comodo also running.. MSE has not so good detection rates..

^ no need to run comodo if you have avast installed. it already has built in firewall. likewise, MSE has built in firewall too. And to top it, win 7 has built in firewall too. so no need of comodo firewall.

err

Avast Free has no Firewall (only paid version has it)

MSE is just an antivirus,

it doesn't include Windows Firewall(which is pre-included in windows 7)

Windows 7 Firewall is just good (chalega) because it has practically no outbound protection

and no HIPS(Heuristic Intrusion Prevention System) thats something that blocks malware even before getting downloaded or executed based on its characteristics

Comodo/Outpost/Online Armor Firewall are the best in business

and are updated quite frequently

outbound protection comes into play if your pc is already infected with trojans or malware.

If you search the net, you will find links to configure windows 7 firewall to stop outbound traffic too. Just because its from microsoft does not mean it badly made. :|

Avast free version has a web shield for stopping virus attacks via http ports and a network shield for scanning connected networks which includes the internet.
