Need to get my Headphone cables redone

I just opened up my Grado box after a couple of months. I had moved house and hadn't been able to find one of my boxes that had some of my stuff till today.

In the shift my headphones seem to have slipped out of their box and were in an odd position all this time and the strain on the cables has caused them to fray. The damage is right above the Y-splitter leading all the way up to the cups. The cable portion below the splitter leading to the 3.5mm jack is much thicker and is fine.

Now I have to get them re-cabled as its more than just aesthetic damage. I have to keep twisting the cables to get any kind of sound out of them. I don't mind spending a bit to get them fixed, but I have no idea where to do so and what cables to use etc etc. I'm hope someone here might have some idea/experience with the same.

I'm attaching a few pics to make things clearer.

Easily doable.

Belden miniquad cable & neutrik plugs are available in India. (same stuff that is used in blue jeans cables)

You will also need a soldering station & appropriate heatshrinks.

That's a relief! Would you know of anyone who does this kind of stuff? I have no soldering knowledge whatsoever and would definitely mess up.

Hmmm you could also get a sound very close to the Alesandro MS2 from your MS1i by doing cable upgrade as they both have the same drivers from what Ive been told ;)

Best of Luck !

i would advice you strongly to not do the re-cabling your headphones, you will never be able to achieve the same sound , maybe better or worst but never the same.

Let me dig some info to back my point.

Reeking the cable upgrade with a proper cable and done properly would definately give him better sound.. someone who knows how to solder properly can get this done quick provided u have all the required accesories for the upgrade. i say go for it.. coz those cables looked messed up! haha :hap2:

Dude anybody you know in delhi who could do a clean job of fixing a good quality 3.5mm jack on my headphones ? Dont want the crappy taped look !

Also get yourself a good carrying case / protective case for the cans to avoid any damage in future :P Alessandro / Grado have some really good official cases. I have one though I don't have a Grado cans .

Did you know that the drivers are finely tuned and are more closely matched? Also if you're talking about the MS2, the metal housing changes the sound a lot. I have heard quite a few Grados including the SR325i ;). Changing the cable makes hardly any difference, certainly not discernible by most but the most trained of ears.

for either of you.

That would be awesome man! I'll try to see if I can get it done here but its not looking good so far. If not let me know when you have the time and I'll send it over.

^Ritvik, try getting it done from your neighbourhood mobile service shop. Like I posted in the other thread, they may have temperature controlled soldering stations with precision tips. The job can be beautifully done. Just ensure that you have the right replacement cables and the 3.5mm connector.

Saves the hassles for shipping it to titana and back. :P
