As the title suggests, my trustworthy companion for over 7 years, my beetel adsl 2+ modem conked off on me last month and I've been in splits whether to buy the same lan modem or to get a wifi modem.

My requirements:
1. Should be cheap, but reliable, i.e. best bang for buck.
2. I need a wifi modem, NOT a router, since my existing modem is resting in pieces.
3. I need it to be able to stay connected to the following:
a. My PC, at all times
b. My fone, occasionally ( I'd connect this for like 2 hours per day)
c. My secondary fone, rarely (I connect this one only to update my games and stuff)
4. My PC doesn't have a wifi receiver, so I'd need a modem with atleast one lan port.

Gimme your opinions. I've spent the last month getting online through borrowed WIFI connections and I'm itching to download the episodes I've missed. Planning to buy in 2-3 days.

Budget: as less as possible without heavy sacrifice on reliability. Im still doing my ca internship so money is an issue.

U need a modem plus router right?

Go to flipkart, check out the cheapest modem plus router from TP LINK and buy it..

When I was in the market for a bike, people suggested that I bought a second hand one to get accustomed to 2 wheels, Instead, I bought a brand new Yamaha R15.

Now you guys are probably thinking why I'm referencing this. That's just cause I find it very similar to my modem + router situation. I started the thread saying I needed it to be cheap. Now I'm thinking of getting the TP Link W8968ND.

Snapdeal has this beast priced at 2288/- http://www.snapdeal.com/product/tplink-300mbps-wireless-n-usb/1490743?pos=2;4

I also thought about the W8961ND but I'm preferring the 8968 over it because of the additional features (which I highly doubts I'll ever use but it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it).and since the price difference is just 350 bucks I feel no need to prefer the 61 instead of the 68.

Tomorrow I'm heading to wazirpur market to get a quote from the local guys. and If I find a better price for the W8968 than 2288 then I will buy it, else I'll buy it from snapdeal.

The only concern to me at this point is about the version1 vs version 2 debacle. Since the version 2 has 5 dbi antenna strength while the version 1 has only 3 dbi. I really wish to get the Version 2. So can anyone guide me as to where on the box do I look at to find exactly which version it is?

Also, if you think there is a better product out there in this price range, please do tell coz I'm a little worried after reading the reviews on flipkart and snapdeal about the restarting and firmware issues.

Yes, wise choice. Buy it before prices jack up back to 2500,also try locally, as the v2 hardware revision is way better than v1.

Posting this through the new modem router! I got it for 2300 in the wazirpur comp. market(could've bargained more since he originally quoted me 2400 only, but this is still a competitive price). It's the version 2 and has range in the whole house, i.e. all three floors of the house. I've kept it in the first room of the middle floor and it is powerful enough to give an adequate signal till the last room on either the top floor or the ground floor. Thanks a lot for the advice guys, I owe you both a cold one!

Told ya, that TP LINK 8968 is currently the most value for money in this range.

Also, TP LINK after sales support is one of the best in the country.

They send u a new one within 1 day of you sending it to them, and they give u newer version too..

Bhai sahab this thing is giving me performance that even my friends are envious of, it iss giving enough signal strength when I'm 2-300 meter away from my home. My initial report is that im very much satisfied with product, infact it is exceeding my expectations.
