Needed: Best BB plan

In Delhi, or for that matter Mumbai, which is the best broadband plan right now as far as speed, pings and price/value are concerned?

I started using Internet at home in early 2006. My first connection was MTNL's 590NU which provided me with 256kbps upload and 256kbps download speed with 1GB of free bandwidth in a month apart from the unlimited usage from 12AM to 8AM.

I was pretty satisfied with it. Charges were just Rs 590 and usually I got around 230kbps to 240kbps download speed and around 200kbps upload speed. Yet this connection had its drawbacks. In a month, the total downtime was three to four days and during daytime the speeds were not what have been promised. But nights matter to me more and the speed was good in night.

Then, in middle of last year MTNL launched 790NU. Up to 2mbps speed was promised and I latched onto it. And to say that I am happy with this plan is an understatement. Speed is good. On good trackers (read private) I can easily get around 1750 kbps. On direct downloading, I can get around 1900 kbps with IDM.

This is to say that a 1GB game demo takes around 60 to 70 minutes to download.

Also, in last one year or so, MTNLs downtime has come down significantly. Now the connection rarely goes down.

But I understand, nothing is perfect and definitely not if we are dealing Indian ISPs. Upload speeds are bad at 256kbps. Also, I have been told that MTNL is bad (very high pings) as far as online gaming is concerned. also, lots of people on TE swear much by Airtel so I believe they must be having their reasons. Then of course, when we talk we often stumble upon that "hidden gem-of-a-plan".

so over to guys. Tell me which plan is best for you and why and what I can expect If I change my plan to, say for example, an Airtel or Spectranet plan. I am not much into online gaming. But I need a connection that can deal with heavy torrent use and should be able to make a short work of 2GB game demos.

:hap2:

^^ Airtel 1mbps UL for 2.2k pm if game pings are important to you. Else BSNL/MTNL NU plans will give you 2mbps speeds. BSNL is better in sense it gives you 2.5GB monthly day downloads (600/-pm) compared to MTNL's day limit of 1.25GB (749/-pm)

Airtel's 1mbps unlimited @ Rs. 2222/-
Me too planning to shift to Airtel....MTNL's 1.25 gb limit in 849nu plan is too less
My usage charge itself is arnd Rs. 1500, add to that Rs. 80 per month for the router and the plan charges rs. 849!
I was waiting for MTNL to launch a few good plans.....it's been so long since they changed the rentals or anything:@

lol... talking about downtime, and here it is. last night my internet connection crapped out. :(

BTW, so what do i need to infer from replies so far. Is the Airtel 1mbps unlimited @ 2.2K is the only upgrade for a user with MTNL 749NU @ up to 2mbps? And seeing it's only 1mbps some would not even call it an upgrade.

there are not many providers in bombay, and I'd call Airtel's 1MBPS Unlimited plan an upgrade from MTNL's 849NU coz, it is UNLIMITED! And I have no clue why MTNL is not launching any new plans for Mumbai

I'm going to wait for a week or two and see if MTNL launches some new plans for Mumbai, if it does and if the plans are economical, well and good, otherwise Airtel FTW

man...am a BSNL lover...using BSNL frm last 3 years...no prb....yaa some time its not good...lol...but u know that yarr its india...so in india everything is never perfect...so..MTNL and BSNL are same thing...in ur case..i think MTNL is the best option for you...it dep on u wht type of use of ur net is...so get the best deal...go for MTNL....c yaaa

I have the TATA Indicom 3 month 2 Mbps hourly plan, I have night unlimited activated, and use it mostly from 9 to 9, apart from weekends, when I am free at home. Damages are a meager 1940 for three months. And the speeds are good, although I live in Shivsrushti (Kurla East) where there is only one local service provider. Previously had Exattnet from the same local guy, but the service sucked. Now get good speeds (around ~200KBps), and consistent service, though there is still downtime when the local guy's DNS server fails once in a while ! I think Tata has raised the rates for new customers, but I still think its good VFM for night time users like me. Ohh and yes I primarily use torrents, had access to Rapidshare Premium account earlier, but no more !

Cheers !
