I think that so far, what a netbook is, is a low-cost PC that doesn’t work that well... The Atom platform is creating an installed base that doesn’t run modern applications. It doesn’t run anything well from Electronic Arts, it doesn’t run anything well from Adobe, it doesn’t run anything well from Microsoft. I just mentioned the top software companies in the world. So in a way, the Atom platform is creating an installed base of PCs that’s going to eventually hurt the PC software industry.

I think we all have to be very thoughtful about the proliferation of PCs that are inferior to what people think a PC should be, yet still is a PC.

Nvidia CEO Sounds Off on Netbooks, Ion Platform, Tegra, and MIDs

Idiots are afraid of people migrating to low-powered netbooks in swarms of bees. Intel and AMD aren't too happy with netbook sales either. It's been hurting their mainstream hardware sales.

Netbooks are here to stay. Quit b1tching about it, high-flying CEOs!

“Great PCs help Intel. Great PCs help humanity.”

as opposed to AMD who help destroy humanity??
So what’s wrong with today’s netbooks?

The whole point of a basic netbook is PORTABILITY, CONNECTIVITY and PRICE.

LAPTOP: What’s your take on netbooks right now?

Jen-Hsun Huang: We’re all trying to figure out what a netbook is.

He is obviously worried since netbooks dont have anything from nVIDIA and most run on free linux distros

A netbook is what I have always wanted out of a laptop. Portabiliy, light weight and low cost. I have a PC for the rest.

Now if only we start getting cheap, touch sensitive netbooks which double up as Tablet PCs

EA, Microsoft and Adobe...hmm. Aren't these the companies well known for their bloatware and poor quality of recent games ;) ?

I can agree about nVidia being worried about netbooks since they dont contain any components from nVidia, but why on earth would it bother nVidia that netbooks run Linux??

Cellphones don't run Adobe or Microsoft applications either. The problem lies with people actually considering Netbooks to be computers. They're not. Totally new kind of device, new kind of use.

^^Oh but when Nv does not have a presence in certain market it has to be going in a wrong direction. ;)

Beside Jen has that foot-in-the-mouth disease like the erstwhile Ken Kutaragi, CEO of SCE.

....and what are they really???

just another rant from a company that is scared of the astounding success that netbooks are seeing. netbooks are far and away the fastest growing segment of computer sales, and their design philosophy offers no space for companies like nvidia who spend a lot and subsequently charge a lot for r&d into high end products.

Which alternate universe are you from?

that is a totally ridiculous statement.

ok, so exactly what percentage of people using PC's use those softwares? apart from MS windows, IE and other few MS softwares, most people dont even need softwares from adobe, EA etc. BTW these netbooks CAN run windows and other small softwares. oh wait, why the hell do we even need MS? hell these netbooks come with linux which can be used for performing all the tasks a normal person needs.

nvidia is just b**ching about something they fear and dont have a product for the netbook.

I do think netbooks in future can perform so well through wifi of 1 gbps, that only OS would be needed and softwares can run over the internet.

Like gmail offliner..google apps..no wonder you guys will soon see adobe online etc if things don't work out the way they want.

as said before by couple of ppl "netbooks are here to stay"

I can see the attempt at being extremely witty, but let me make myself clear anyway.

-> Mainstream cellphones are still limited in that they cannot run a full fledged version of Adobe Photoshop or MS Office.

-> For one thing, a Computer is anything with a processor inside of it. So what I meant was that Netbooks shouldn't be pit against Laptop and Desktop PCs, just like the cellphones can't(and shouldn't IMO) be pitted against Netbooks. Netbooks are somewhat of an amalgam of PMPs and Laptop PCs, but that doesn't mean they have to fall into either of the two categories.

Try posting something that actually has a point next time.

i didnt understand why the ceo was ranting about netbooks at the very show where nvidia launched their ion platform....
shoot me if the ion is nothing other than the future netbook platform..:bleh:

Exactly what I was wondering... but then again "This" is what we love Jen-Hsun Huang for, guy's got knack to shoot off his mouth in most irrelevant manner... for our amusement. :bleh:

I can almost see what's coming next.
