Hi guys,

Need to buy something for network storage and thought of this.

Flipkart.com: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home 3.5 inch 2 TB: External Hard Drive

Comments/Suggestions for any others?

Questions:

1. If i have 2 Macs and 2 PCs on the network, can they all back up to this? Don't have the Macs yet so no clue about Macs at all.

2. If I connect this with ethernet to my router, can I attach another HDD to it via USB? Will it show up as another drive on the network?

3. What would be time taken to back up say 1gb over wifi?

Just saw this. Would this be a better choice? Could have 2 drives for added back up.

Seagate GoFlex Home supports backup from multiple computer and works fine with both Mac and PC.

However if only backup is your main aim then go for the Netgear NAS as it is RAID 1. It mirrors the data on one bay into the other.

I saw a couple of youtube reviews of the Netgear NAS some time ago and the reviews said little slow speeds for backup. Also there were issues regarding Mac finder and Windows Explorer not opening up the folders properly. That might have been resolved already in firmware upgrades.

The Netgear works out a bit more expensive, seems safer hough. However, I saw some not so good reviews, and the charge you 20 dollars a year fo online access.

Was wondering if I could go with the Seagate and attach another 2TB drive thru USB and do manual back ups once a week or so.

I have been thinking a lot about backup solutions. If your data is not dynamic, example tour photos and videos only, you can setup a cheap rig as file server. Need not be always on. Put a 2 TB HDD or another 2 TB if you want and if yo have a good unlimited connection, setup a Carbonite account. $59/yr. Unlimited backup. What say? Data is safe for life.

Thanks guys. Smallnetbuilder is great.

Ordered the Seagate, and will use a second HDD for say weekly back ups as suggested by BikeAdvice.

Flipkart delivered in 30 hours. Had 2 issues - both resolved.

1. Network drive would go off line very often. Resolved by mapping the drive and not relying on Seagate software

2. While copying large volumes of data, it would stop after 80-100gb. Located to faulty cable. Replaced, and all is hunky dory.

Would strongly recommend this to anyone who needs a network drive.

Not yet tested with Macs as our Macs are yet to arrive. Is it similar to map a network drive with Mac?
