Guide
My cousin just out of college with a BE in Electronics, wants to pursue his career in networking.
And for that he's looking into some training + certification institutes.

Today I visited one, Networker's Home in HSR Layout, Bangalore.
Some courses they offer are like
  • CCNA+CCNP+CCNA Security+CCNP Security + CCIE Security
  • CCNA+CCNP+CCNA Voice+CCNP Voice+ CCIE Voice
(both courses are 8 months classroom coaching, 5 days a week, 24x7 lab - fee is Rs 2lacs)
Plus, they offer some other certification courses - mainly some different combinations of the above mentioned certis.

When I asked about in which companies, at what package their previous students got recruited, they were not very keen to answer that. Started with some vague/generic words.

So, how useful are those courses/certis w.r.t. career prospect?
Taking into account the huge time (8 months on paper, but one guy told it may stretch till 10+ months) and money (2lacs), is it worth enrolling for such courses?

If no, what may be other options for a fresher in a career in networking ?

Thanx vivek.
First of all ask your cousin about basic networking concepts ? If basic funda of networkings are clear like OSI layers, lan , wan etc. Which I guess covered in b.e. then he should start with CCNA by Todd lammle book.

Then once clears with lammles book start with Cisco press book.

Reason I advised to read Two book is lammle's networking language is easy to understand for newbies.

For practical he can download simulators which are available on Google and he can practice it.
I have cleared my ccna exam with lammle's book in 10 days with approx 8-10 hours reading daily.

Later on he can refer only Cisco press books for CCNP and CCIE.
And tell him SAY NO TO DUMPS

if he wants to learn from the best, please go with mohans networking institute, hes has the best networking faculty and the way he teaches is awesome, many guys will vouch for him

i took my CCNA classes from there and scored well !!

i believe in self study personally using cbtnuggets trainsignal and pluralsight and stuff

+ 1. Say no to Dumps. Dumps are the old Q & A from previous exams put online which people tend to mug up and go for the exams.

OP: Is the fees only for training or includes certification as well?

No point doing a CCIE this early for starters! CCNA and CCNP is fine! But then I guess he will rethink his strategy and finalise on what he wants to do after 2-3 years of on hand experience in the Networking Industry, then is the time to think if he wants a forward path to CCIE or not!

Getting the concepts right is the foremost requirement . I have been working with tech support for the past 9 years and even today i feel that i am still learning . Do CCNA , Get hands on and then do CCNP in the field you want to pursue further. Dont just follow the crowd. Anyone can get the certification by mugging up the dumps, whats needed the most in the interview is the knowledge and clarification about concepts. Build a better base for a stronger building.
