Networking Settings Are Forgotten

A relative of mine is facing a weird problem for some days.

Whenever he starts the PC, he has to configure IP address and other networking settings before connecting to the Internet.

I'm thinking of reinstalling windows as I don't think this is a hardware issue. However I'd like to know if any of you have faced similar problem and how did you solved it.

How machine is connected to internet, is it wired or wireless? A LAN connection or a modem or dial-up? Which OS and which machine?

Reinstall network drivers.

Done that already. No luck.

Wired Lan Connection. Windows 7 desktop. I don't remember the specs.

Most probably DHCP issue from router. May be it's disabled?

There's no router, the cable is directly connected to PC.

See if there is a deep freeze like application installed which does not save any work done on the PC.

No, there isn't.

if its windows and connecting to the router, ensure WLAN autoconfig and wiredautoconfig are services running.

You may try with a spare pci lan card and configure that as the default adapter and disable the onboard one. If it works fine then something is wrong with onboard lan.

Also has he installed any networking related utility recently coz of which it loads as services/startup in background causing this scenario? Ask him as I highly doubt something might have been installed relating to network.

You can try resetting the TCP/IP stack.
  1. At the command prompt type: netsh winsock reset catalog and press [Enter].
  2. Next type: netsh int ip reset reset.log and press [Enter].
  3. Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
