Hi Mates,

Just last december (2010) I bought 2TB Seagate Harddisk in Ritchie Street, Chennai. it worked well but suddenly its making clicking/ticking kinda sound.

First it started once a day and now its making often. If i open any program, the screen kinda hangs and the clicking sound then the program opens.

I don't know what to do now, only 400+ GBs are free in this drive, I cant afford to buy an external drive for back-up now. :/

may be its because of my PSU ? or any other releated?

I used Diskkeeper to check errors and defragmentation but still the sound not stopping.

My System Configuration.

Intel i7 860 2.8
Intel DP55KG Mother Board
2x2=4GB DD3 RAM
HDD 1TB Seagate (old) and 2TB Seagate (new)
Nvidia GTX 260 (Black Edition - OC)
LG DVD Writer
Corsair TX550 Watts PSU
4 120mm Fans (3 LED)
Cooler Master CM-690 Cabinet
TATA Photon Wireless Modem
DELL 24inch Monitor

System run 20 hours a day.

Please some help me, what should i do now.. :/

waiting for the replies...

Thank You. :)

Did diskkeeper report any errors ? Could be the motor as well. Try to borrow a HDD and backup and RMA

if its an occasional clicking sound that comes during startup and when you start accesing the drive then its ok !

im guessing your os is installed on amother drive nt this !

Dude your gonna get screwed, the same thing happed to me on my 1TB,after a year of use it stared to make the clicking noise less, and it eventually kept on increasing and hangs the comp, but it was torelable, but after some months the clicking noise was almost continuous and the comp used to take almost half an hour to boot to windows, because it was the os drive, then the hdd totally making the clicks, continually and the pc was unusable,i bought an 1tb wd green, and gave it for warranty, and never buying seagate again.

Your HDD is dying. Sounds like physical sector damage. You have no option but to backup and RMA.

Hard Disk Sentinel (there is a trial version) should confirm this and give you more specifics.

Your system specs look fine, so it could just be an unfortunate case of a bad drive.

Clicking sound is not good. As mentioned above, your HDD is gonna die soon. Backup all your data and get your HDD RMA'ed.

THIS is why I hate Seagate. I've faced exactly the same problem with 3-4 NEW Seagate HDDs. :|

Next time, buy a WD.

Get HD Tune and scan your drive with it. If possible, post screenshots for the results here. We might be able to help u out better that way.

I have noticed that the higher the drive capacity, the higher is the failure rate. Just my experience... might not be a rule!!

First of all, thank you everyone for your replies...

Nope, diskkeeper and other tuneup software's didn't show any errors.

Yes, when I switch on the CPU, the HardDisk making a click, click sound (even before the monitor shows intel logo)

and also yes the OS is installed on another HD, this 2TB is for backup purpose.

so the clicking sound is normal?

Thank you for this software Crazy_Eddy..

Installed and checked, the software shows no signs of errors. I did the Short-Self test and the result OK (Green) but I didn't do the Extended test coz the time shows 444 minutes remaining.!

Health and Error Scan shows ALL Green.

So, the clicking sound is normal ? :/

I moved some of the files but there's lots of small files, its a headache :/

again.. thank you all for your replies, now I kinda feeling OK coz of this results :)

If you use these third party softwares then the errors might not show,go to Seagate site and download seatools and check, you might get memory corrupt errors,if you dont get them ,then ur lucky ,back it up asap, because the hangs and clicking noise will increase with time.

This is not the screenshot I was looking for... :P

I wanted the Health Tab Screnshot. Neway, if everything shows 'ALL Green', u needn't worry.

Maybe the sound is not coming from the HDD at all. Maybe it's the case fan sound....

@ joel.monty: Sometimes the seatools gives results as OK but still the drive has issues. I have had the best results with HD Tune. :)

@ OP:
No harm in trying seatools though. Also, is your drive too fragmented?? If it is, defragment it. That might be causing the delay at app launch.

BTW, did you check the old 1TB drive for errors as well??

I have a 250GB HD on which the os is installed and a 1TB HD which i use for storing purpose.
When the 1TB harddrive is not being used it shuts off automatically to save power and when i try to access thing on that drive it starts with a clicking sound.
So i guess it is normal.

I dunno what this clicking sound actually sounds like... :S

Do u people mean to say the disk whirring/spinning sound that emanates from the drive during spin up??

If that is what you mean, it is perfectly NORMAL.... :P

If u want that sound to disappear, u'll need to get a SSD!!

Yes the disk first spins up followed by a clicking sound :)
Mine only spins up making a whirring sound like the propeller of a micro bi plane or helicopter... :P

No clicking sound... Even my Seagate FreAgent GO does the same thing. But no Clicking sound...

I have seen some recently bought ones in mine and my friends pc making such noise.
Though my old one spins up without any clicking noise. :)

Installed SeaTools and did some tests..

SMART Check > Pass (Green) ~ Both Drives
Short Drive Self-test > Pass (Green) ~ Both Drives
Short Generic > Pass (Green) ~ Both Drives

Long test takes long time, so I stopped in middle and when I started the Advanced test, SeaTools warned me that the data in the drive might loss!. so I didn't started that test.

I checked both drives and result shows ALL Green. No RED (damage). :)

but i am sure though, the sound is coming from HD!.

Analyzed with Diskkeeper and it shows all drives are in Blue (File Structure)

may be its normal like Faraz and buddingwhizkid said... hope so...

now the sound is kinda stopped, only can hear when system turned on and sometime when i open any program or browsing..

well, thanks for the response mates.. :)

That's right. Even my Seagate spins up followed by a clicking sound. However, my WD does not make any noise before/after spinning up.

So, I guess clicking noise is OK during HDD spin-up/spin-down. If it's making a clicking noise during spinning then most probably it's gonna die soon. :S

^^ Maybe that's the reason I have no clicking sound... I have a WD Blue...

But then, even my Seagate Freeagent Go makes no clicking sound...
