Hi friends,

I have a old Whirlpool 1.5 ton window AC. Recently around 15 days back it gave problem in cooling. I called the engineer and he said that the gas is leaked and hence he charged me Rs.1500/- for filling the gas. He said that the gas problem is in all homes which are near a nala.

Now 2 days back it again finished cooling. I called the same engineer and this time he again said that the gas has leaked and this time it has leaked from the right hand side coils. he also showed me the oil coming out of the coils.

Now he says that it can't be repaired but the coil has to be changed and after that the gas has to be filled. He now will be charging Rs.4000/- for these coil change and gas filing.

1. Now I want to know will it be better to sell the current AC (pls tell what should be its selling price) and buy a new one as it is already 5 years old and buy a split AC instead of it as i think it will be safe as its main body will be inside the house and it will not be affected by its nala.

OR

2. Should I continue with the same AC by getting it repaired?

3. Please also suggest one split AC for me in the budget of Rs.35000/- Max.

Regards

Its pretty old at 5 years . We sold ours at about 3.5k, sold it to those who were installing . Got a new one at 20-23k(don't remeber exactly ) , it was a while ago . . It was a window Ac from whirlpool . The costs keep adding up . Next year you might have another problem .

I just got the compressor on my old Whirlpool 1.5 ton split A/C changed today morning, it costed Rs.10,500/- including gas filling charges, he was offering Rs.1,000/- for the old compressor. I didn't know he was going to replace only the inside machinery (compressor) in the outdoor unit, I thought he'd replace the whole external unit :P

Anyway, the AC is cooling well again. He said that Rotary compressors cannot be repaired, is that true? We decided to keep the old compressor and see if we can have it repaired, if so, then would it be possible to get a new outdoor unit built from scratch using the compressor? Anyway, he has offered to buy the compressor at a later date too.

What I think is that putting rs.4000 is better option as any new good AC does not come below Rs.25000/- and if i get the AC coils changed by the engineer, the AC would become almost new as it is the coils only that leak and if that is new, then everything is leak free.

What's yr take?

It is strange to hear that an AC has developed gas leakage just after 5 yrs. I think you should get a second opinion and if possible from a trusted technician. Our AC is over 10 years old and never had to get it's gas changed or any other high maintenance job done on it, though it has started performing under par this year.
