Hemant... i'd suggest that you wait a while before deciding on some other connection than Airtel. I've used BSNL before Airtel (I live in Pune BTW) and the service and the speed sucked. Even if Airtel is giving me 'just' 256kbps ... i consistently get that speed any time of the night or day and tech support is very helpful and friendly.
I'd recommend that you wait until the first week of Feb or so. If Airtel does not announce any increase in speeds, you can decide whether to go in for speed or service.

is it just a USB modem or does it also have ethernet ports?

The Beetel 220BX modem has both USB and ethernet, but use the ethernet port.

If u have to use the USB connection , dont take the 220bx . The USB connection is too delicate , take a web dist 2 instead..

ask the guy for a "web distributor 2" modem , he may say its' old & stuff .. but its' got the best USB support avail by Airtel , If u want a good ETH conn modem , beetel 220bx

Airtel usually provides the Beetel 220x modem. It has both Ethernet & USB ports. I use the Ethernet port to connect it to my pc and no problems with that, but it's reported to be finicky when used with the USB.
The default configuration as provided by Airtel is just basic. But there are plenty of sites on the net that will tell you how to hack the modem to allow port forwarding etc.
The modem has just one problem IMO, you have to restart it every few day or so or else your connection speeds keep dropping or even lose the connection.
