Observations by astronomers tracking near-Earth asteroids have raised a new object to the top of the Earth-threat list.

The asteroid could strike the Earth in 2102. However, Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near Earth Object Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, US, told New Scientist: "The most likely situation, by far, is that additional observations will bring it back down to a zero."

He adds: "We're more likely to be hit between now and then by an object that we don't know about."

On 23 February, new observations allowed researchers to more accurately calculate the orbit of the asteroid, named 2004 VD17, which was originally detected by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's LINEAR project. Since the improvement did not rule out a potential collision with the Earth on 4 May 2102, they increased the asteroid's rating to level 2 on the Torino Scale, a relatively rare event.

Degrees of danger

The Torino Scale, adopted in 1999, is akin to a Richter scale for asteroid impacts. The vast majority of the 4000 or so near-Earth objects (NEOs) detected so far have been assigned to level zero on the Torino scale, meaning they have "no likely consequences".

Level 1, colour-coded green, suggests a possible impact that "merits careful monitoring". Beyond that, the risk continues to rise along the scale – levels 2, 3 and 4 are yellow; 5, 6 and 7 are orange; while 8, 9 and 10 earn red.

The highest level ever reached by an asteroid was level 4 by Apophis (2004 MN4) in December 2004, but subsequent calculations downgraded that concern to a level 1. So VD17 currently claims the top spot on NASA's online list of potential asteroid impacts.

Despite the rarity of the yellow designation, Yeomans says "Torino 2 is not very alarming." He notes that the scale does not take account of how soon an impact may occur, unlike its rival, the Palermo Scale.

Based on current observations, he says the asteroid has a 1 in 1600 chance of striking the Earth in 2102 and a 1 in 500,000 chance of hitting two years later. But further observations will soon refine the orbit calculation for VD17 – and hopefully ease minds.

NEO hunter, Andrea Milani Comparetti of the University of Pisa, Italy, says VD17 "is a serious problem, but not for our generation". He also notes that VD17 is dim and distant and is not projected to pass close by the Earth before 2102. "You will need fairly powerful telescopes to see it before it arrives," he told New Scientist.

One more of those rocks to kiss earth... but i guess 2102 is like too far..and by then the earth(if survived by war, tsunamis, earthquakes etc.) will definitely have the technology to fend off the devil to where it came from...

But the more immediate threat is Apophis which doesnt give enough time for preparation and drills as it is headed towards earth in 2029 and subsequently has a chance of slamming earth in 2036...that may happen in our lifetime!!

But, 2102?? We all will be long dead and resting in peace..so we need not really worry about it.. :)

^ Apophis has been downgraded on Torino scale to 1 but VD17 is currently on 2 but i hope that future obsevations would downgrade it too :)

There is nothing to fear about Apophis anymore ;) as they say "It is not what we see that is going to HIT us, it would be something we have not mapped or seen yet" :hap5:

^^Yeah..lets hope none of those rocks hurling thru space reach our home..

but then to think of it, we may not need to wait for any rocks..we, ourselves are capable enough to destroy the earth ten times more destructively than any rock from the heavens.. and the biggest irony is that those asteroid's path can be calculated and neutralized, but what about the destruction waiting in the confines of our only home in the universe??

Hmm.. Something we havent seen, what about a World War 3 :P...

Lol...

Im just curious on this matter, well, we know that an Asteroid will hit Earth sometime or the other, just like when the Dinosaurs were on earth.

So, its better we know and we can do something about it, rather than just watch :D.

Again, Cockroaches will survive. Lol.

^^Well, looking at the current happenings, its either going to be WW 3 or CRUSADES 2... :bleh: Anyways, both are equally destructive...

I vote for Crusades 2 :P

Well,if the world was going to end..my frnds and me had decided tht we would party hard:hap2: but we later changed it to coming to some singapore server and then fragging our heads off.
I know it seems crazy but who cares since the world is gonna end.

Now if you don't mind,I gotta try out the leet model in css.

I have heard a Saying which is true to some extent

Man Proposes God Disposes

I believe all these predictions will meet the same fate as of the earlier predictions aka Failure!!!

@Cayotee u may/maynot live till 2102 but ur children and grandchildren will definetly live, so think bout them :P

working under the project of designing a time machine .. company anyone? ;) well i wanna see the future for real .. sadly if something miraculous didnt happens in my life i wont be able to see it .. sigh.

Time travel is possible, if you go into space, into the earths orbit, and go round the opposite way of its spinning very fast! :D.

now that is a "not so acceptable" statement, cos going by the technological advances, if u grow rich enough, you might even live for ....say the next 500 years.....i mean the biotechnology field has many possibilities in store, like stopping n reversing ageing..... so u'd better get rich if u want to live that long :)

and yes about the time machine, i m not sure if man has still actually understood if "time" exists as such , and if yes , how....now the point is that time is not the "clock time" that we think it is, u'll need a bit of googling and a lot of thinking to get the thing, and what u'll get is that u can "probably" not imagine what time can be, just a rough idea, that it is similar to the 3 "apparent" dimensions.

Yeah..i may love to think about those anti ageing possibilities, but i am still on firm ground and that technology may still be a few decades away..(i mean reaching the population and not remaining in the dreary confines of a laboratory..);)

Also, no one can guarantee that we will die of natural causes..Suppose, a person drowns in a sea or falls from the sky, then how useful will those drugs be?? ;) :bleh:

How can i think about them if i dont know who they will be..?What they will look like.. :bleh:
