So, do we have a 590IS killer here?

From specs and reviews it seems that PowerShot 590IS - the mighty budget king from infallible Canon - has been finally beaten by FujiFilm with FinePix S5800. This cam has:

- 8MP

- 10XOptical Zoom and +5X Digital Zoom (it carries super zoom tag)

- and all other bells and whistles except Image Stabilization

Full specs: FUJIFILM Global | FinePix S5800 : Product Views

More importantly, it is priced around 8K :ohyeah:

PS: this cam was available when I bought 590IS a couple of months ago. But it seems nobody has any idea about it... not even at TE.

I am not a die hard photographer, but really, i do think Image Stabilization is an important and vital characteristic of a decent enuf camera.
absence of IS will be a factor considered by quite a few.

Veteran Shutterbugs mite shed some light on this...

+1 to that....it can be a 590IS killer because of the missing IS on it.....IS is very important as i have the same missing it on my cam ...and it does make a hell lot of a difference....

Pros:
1. 10x zoom
2. Nice well-built body and rubber grip. It's black too, if u like that.
3. That's it. And probably the 8k sticker tag

Cons:
1. You can't use a 10x zoom 80% of the time without any IS in it. Any shutter speeds below 1/200th of a second will suffer at the long-end of the lens. So you need LOTS of light.
2. No wide-angle at all. 38mm.
3. Not a SuperCCD Fuji sensor, so this is just another small 1/2.5" sensor with 8 mps packed into it. Result - as noisy as the others.
4. Slow burst rate (1.3fps for 3 shots!).
5. Slightly slower lens than rest of competition (no f2.8)
6. Max shutter speed only 4 seconds - forget the cool light-trail shots or moonlight captures.

Way too many cons to really justify picking it up. The lack of IS will hurt, but you might just get a few cool 10x zoom shots in daylight.
Hope that helps from a veteran shutterbug. :D :D

Now that payne dada has overexposed the image of camera, what more can i say ! :)
Always felt these shortcomings of this camera but still its very very good at 8K, i believe. Anyways any other camera to compete with this in this price bracket ?

Even with those shortcoming, if it is really at 8k then it makes it a killer value for casual shutterbugs. Offcourse, personally I cannot find a decent prosumer camera in current offerings (in 15-20k space). This at least seems to better than SX100IS in quite few terms, for the price it's asking.

Theres not much of anything in buying a Fuji cam without superccd sensor. Though the compact f series seems to be good.

I have used S5000 for 3+ years and loved the colors it produced. But things have changed a lot and Fuji has not been fast in building competitive products.
