Please suggest me a car with price tag ~6 L INR. (preferably diesel)

Heard about Chevy Sail but it is not yet launched. I have also shortlisted Hyundai i20 (Magna optional CDRi) but cannot guess which will be a better option.

Also give me some light on diesel cars. Do they degrade their performance after some years? (I dont have much insights on diesel cars)

Thanks in advance!

Diesel cars are supposedly less refined then their petrol counter-parts,if not maintained properly, they develop start clattering but even petrol cars not maintained properly shall not remain refined for long,so the only thing you need to keep in mind is don't abuse the car and service it regularly!!
moreover these days the diesel ones are getting better at refinement i.e, lesser engine noise n clatter unlike what it used to be a few years back...
So you should be fine with a diesel,no problem at all...the only thing you need to ask yourself is if you need a diesel car at all(if you don't drive much something below 2k kms /p.m. then you are better off with a petrol since diesel's are expensive)!!
Considering the rising petrol prices i think diesel's will be preferred even though it commands a premium(more expensive than petrol),but since the running cost of petrol will be very high so the premium shall be off-set in a few years...
And also the diesel's have turbo lag i.e, it is a little sluggish at low rpm's but once you get in the power band it's a smooth drive!!
And the i20 i think is a good choice...

Can you extend our budget?

Diesel options in your budget are a bit sparse to be honest.of the top of my head,i can suggest you - beat, figo and sŵift./ritz.

i think it will be a wise choice to wait for chevy sail , even if its a chinese designed one , you can look at the initial reviews and then decide

also do remember that there has been news recently that honda is testing the diesel version of brio.awesome car, totally worth the wait if you are looking for a diesel hatchback.

If diesel
Add d polo diesel to ur list..
Chuck out the i20
Swift is and always will be an all time fav.
Ford figo too is a good choice.
Fabia is the most spacious but not sure abt the maintenance costs

If petrol.....
Ford figo or swift...

New age diesel cars have really come a long way. Almost all new age diesel engines are based on Bosch's Common Rail Direct Injection technology which revolutionized Diesel engines. The current engines are less noisy, more reliable, more powerful, extremely efficient, etc. Thanks to innovations in the newer engines they have become trouble free and do not need heavy maintenance like older gen engines.
So it is safe to say that in terms of reliability, both petrol and diesel new cars are equivalent with respect to ease of maintenance. It is a fact that when it comes to maintenance costs, even today diesel ones would be marginally more because of the basic nature of a diesel engine.
In the long run though, if your daily running is decent enough, the cost difference between a petrol and diesel car is easily recovered.
Irrespective or whether it is a petrol or diesel car, periodical maintenance goes a long way in increasing the engine life.
Almost all new gen diesel cars, small or big are turbocharged which has increased their fuel efficiency tremendously, in some cases its almost double of their petrol counterparts. Diesel engines being high compression engines, have more torque compared to petrol engines and since the new ones are turbocharged, you have even more power and torque, making these cars extremely fun to drive.
Having had the opportunity to own a Swift diesel and Getz diesel, I can safely say that in terms of handling, the swift is way ahead compared to the Getz. The getz has a stonker of an engine so its a straight line monster. Somehow, I am not too happy with Hyundai handling, steering response but apart from this, their cars are good.
i20 too suffers from the same problem, horrible suspension setup, vague steering feel and to some extent, poor ergonomics.
Ok so now that you have been given basic idea about diesel cars, here is my take on several hatchbacks available in India

Suzuki Swift Diesel - Pros - Proven engine, excellent chassis and suspension setup, interior quality is improved with some new features, massive service support across the country, cheap to maintain.
Cons - Reduced boot space, ridiculously long waiting periods,Ride can be a bit bumpy at times. Car comes with mediocre tyres.
Suzuki Swift Petrol - Pros - New gen K series engine with VVT. excellent chassis and suspension setup, interior quality is improved with some new features, cheaper than its diesel counterpart, massive service support across the country, cheap to maintain.
Cons - Variable valve timing will improve power but all that power would be tucked away at higher RPM bands making it useless in city driving, Won't be as fuel efficient as its diesel counterpart.
Ford Figo Diesel - Pros - Proven diesel engine, brilliant chassis and handling, feels more European than american, making it so good
Cons - No power windows even on top end model, dependency on dealership, some might find rear passenger area cramped.
Ford Figo Petrol - Pros - Good VFM, superb chassis and handling.
Cons -Poor engine performance,Even top end model doesn't get rear power windows,no parts available in open market making you dependent on the dealership.
Hyundai i20 Diesel - Pros - Stonker of a engine, good looking, loaded with features, top notch build quality, exceptional service support across the country.
Cons - Expensive, uninspiring chassis and suspension setup, vague steering feel.
Hyundai i20 Petrol - Pros -2 engine options, option for Auto transmission, good build quality, dealership network, easy to maintain.
Cons - mediocre performance, expensive, uninspiring chassis and suspension setup, vague steering feel.
Fiat Grande Punto Diesel - Pros - 2 engine options, beautiful chassis and suspension design, typical European handling characteristics, good looking.
Cons - horrible A.S.S backup, some variants are expensive.
Fiat Grande Punto Petrol - Pros - Decent engine performance, beautiful chassis and suspension design, typical European handling characteristics, good looking.
Cons - mediocre performance compared to diesel variants, horrible A.S.S backup, some variants are expensive.
Nissan Micra Diesel - Pros - Proven engine, Japanese reliability, decent handling.
Cons - underdeveloped service network, not exactly a looker, expensive
Nissan Micra Petrol - Pros - Japanese reliability, decent handling.
Cons - lackluster performance, underdeveloped service network, not exactly a looker.
I guess I have covered most of the current popular models, If you need a take on some other models available, let me know.
Hope this helps :)

i20's suspension is softly setup for bone-jarring Indian potholes. Hyundai knows that this affordable car is going to be used/abused in cities, towns and villages even, hence the setup. While the downside being that it may not cut corners easily at high speeds, the upside is superb comfort which the Ford figo and the Swift can't match.
Moreover, the front seats of the i20 are extremely comfortable. A friend who owns Audi A4 said that he finds it more comfy than his own car's front seats!

Ford figo is a good option for a tighter budget. Offers more rear-seat space and boot space than any other hatchback (Exception: Skoda Fabia and Honda Jazz).

But looking at sales figures, freshness and feature offering, I would vouch for the i20 diesel eyes-closed.

Oh, in-case majority driving is going to be on the highway, then a sedan would be a better choice.

There is always a trade off when it comes to suspension setup. Softer setup gives comfort at the expense of handling and vice versa.
I personally hate too soft a suspension, it makes you feel sick and feels wayward around corners if you are really hammering it. Have you ever sat in the rear of an i20 ? If not try once and you shall know what I mean.
I hate the front seats of my Getz. Problem is the seats are not designed for tall people.
I found the rear seat space poor in the Figo, maybe just because I am a bit on the taller side.

There is a hatchback from Toyota- "Liva". it is a localized Toyota model unlike Innova etc which have parts from Thailand. I've read some Etios has got "water seeping through body shell" complaint..Hope Liva is better. It has got good fuel efficiency and Toyota service will be awesome.
