i5 and i7 CPUs doesn't support DDR2 modules, you have to either buy DDR3 or Get an AMD rig.

My suggestion for an AM2+/AM3 AMD rig:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE (9.6K @ ItWares)
Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H (dunno whether its available now, I'm also looking for it) (around 5.5K)
4GB DDR2 RAM (you already have)
Any good ventilated mid-size tower chassis (2K)
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB (10.5K) (Optional if you don't play hardcore games)
WD HDD 500GB (2.5K)
DVD writer (1K)
Keyboard<Gigabyte>/Mice<Gigabyte M6880> (1.2K)
Mouse Pad <SS Qck Mass> (0.75K)
Monitor (I guess you already have)
Corsair VX450 Power Supply (4K)

Total: 37K (approx)

CPU - Intel Core i5 750 - 9.9k

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-P55-UD2 - 6.2k

RAM - G Skill DDR3 1600 Mhz 2 x 2GB - 6.5k

HDD - WD 500GB Blue SATAII - 2.5k

GPU- MSI HD 5770 1GB-9.6k

Cabinet - NZXT Gamma - 2.2k

SMPS - Corsair VX450 - 3.9k

TOTAL ~ 40.8k

why not just upgrade the processor to a quad core, and get a new psu and gpu?

don't think there'll be that much of a performance difference between and an icore and a core2 quad set-up.
