CPU/Mobo New Desktop. Help! techies!

I am planning to gift a new desktop to my dad. He is still on old P-III
He needs computer for basic Html Web development, surfing the net thats it.

I am confused between Coreduo/Core 2 duo?
I am planning on 1 GB ram or 2 GB if there is not much difference in price.
He already has 60 GB hdd on his present system so he doesnt need a new one.
A DVD RW
And a 17' Flat screen LCD monitor.

Now i was gng through different threads here and now m very confused coz there are so many stuff even if i choose core2duo. Like mother board and all. Please suggest me the best config for me. I will be very thankful.

AMD Athlon 64 x2 3600+ ~ 3.3k

Jetway M2A692-GDG AMD 690G Based Motherboard ~ 3.5k

Kingston 2 x 1 GB PC2-5400 DDR2 Memory @ 667 Mhz ~ 3.2k

Viewsonic 17" Widescreen ~ 8.5k

Asus Lightscribe SATA DVD Burner ~ 2.3k

Blues Cabinet + Power Supply ~ Max 2k

Total ~ 22.8k

Does he already have the dvdrw and monitor?

A basic system would be something like this -

CPU - AMD Athlon64 X2 3600+ Rs 3500

Motherboard - Jetway 690g Rs 3300

Ram - Dynet / Kingston 1GB ~ Rs 1600 (not sure of this)

Cabinet with PSU - Zebronics / VIP Rs 1000 - 2000

If he needs dvdrw and monitor, then -

Sony Sata DVD-RW ~ Rs 1800

Samsung 740N 17" LCD ~Rs 8500

Any reason for not going for AMD?
You will end up spending more without any need of it if you go with Intel C2D. That much processing power is not required. With MSI-Neo F you will also need a graphic card.
AMD at the moment is the cheapest to obtain for your application. It runs cool. Has more than enough processing power for the application and its a lot cheaper.
AMD x2 3600+ and Jetway 690G mobo will be perfect combo.

Here is a link which help you understand core 2 Duo.

Intel Core 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As funky said ,if you are not much into gaming ,better go for AMD which is best bang for the buck.

with regard to your configuration

Intel e4300 + msi neo ( This is the Mother Board )

1GB KINGSTON RAM

zebronics cabinet

17" lcd samsung / viewsonic / lg --9

mouse logitech optical -- 0.35

speakers atp3 (These are best VFM)

dvd rw - lite on / lg h42n

rest everything is fine. :)

Why would you want a Core2Duo setup for a person who doesn't care about gaming and other high performance apps etc. :bleh: I agree with Funky.

Get AMD x2 3600 + Jetway AMD 690G combo...best bang for buck. :hap2:

If you insist on Core2Duo then get E4300/E4400 + 965 Mobo combo. :)

if u are still clinging to the Heat problems AMD had a few years ago, they are long gone man, u can google it or ask our members, a lot of people here uses AMD and are quite happy with it.

so get him a AMD it'll do good to both of u, good luck.

ya dude get the amd , there is no point puting money into intel if you aint gonna use it. the amd 3600x2 will be more than enough for the daily use applications.

As suggested by everyone. I guess I will go with Amd. So the config will be as below.
AMD x2 3600 + Jetway AMD 690G(what is the processing speed?)
1GB KINGSTON RAM (Shall i go for 2gb?)
zebronics cabinet.(Please tell me more about other brand cabinets)
17" lcd samsung / viewsonic / lg --9(which of three is best)
mouse logitech optical -- 0.35
speakers atp3
dvd rw - lg h42n

The AMD X2 3600 is 1.9ghz ( be sure to get the Brisbane core which is 1.9ghz and 65nm)
2ghz one is the windsor

1GB ram shud be enough even for vista.. since ur usage wont be heavy.

among all the cheap cabinets, zebby is prolly ur best choice. other than tht u may see the SLB or the Chieftech cabinets which are a little more expensive.

i wud say go for viewsonic

^^ I have to disagree about RAM, get 2 GB of RAM minimum, the prices are just right for RAM these days and DDR3 is just about to be bestowed upon us which will in all likelyhood only increase DDR2 prices

Besides 2 GB isn't so bad, you get a smoother performance especially with loads of apps open, Vista ofcourse I am sure can always use more RAM :)

And yeah, get a Brisbane Core, Check http://www.techenclave.com/forums/definitive-guide-distinguishing-between-amd-athlon-92177.html to know how to differentiate between Windsor and Brisbane (it's real easy)

dont get the PENTIUM D ur better of with a AMD and if you insist on a inte get at least a E4300 CORE2DUO processor not the crappy pentium d's.

cabinet along with a good SMPS what spms u thinking . in case your budget is low get your self a cheaper cabinet and a good smps . something like the cooler master 380w for 1.75 will be a good buy.

This website shuld give a rough idea of rates .

http://www.deltapage.com/

BTW what is your budget ?.

This will help us to give a good configuration for that money.:)

The config doesnt look good. Dont go pentium D .Go for Core 2 duo.

Internet has nothing to do with motherboard:p .You have sufficient ram and good processor and a good modem .of course , the speed of your internet connection.

STAY AWAY FROM PENTIUM D's

@200mph, write this in ur Toscar winning thread's first post :p

STAY AWAY FROM PENTIUM D's

will ya :D

Alright will stay away frm Pentium D's. Well my budget is around 20 - 25K. Can extend it to 30K bt not willingly..LOL.. So kindly guide me best config in 25K. And thanks for the website frnd it is very helpful. By the way my comp dealer jst gave me rates for the pc i want.

Core 2 duo processer- 7900 (he is blank abt model no. That starts with E)He jst said its 1.8ghz

Intel 965- 5600
kingston 1GB- 2400
sata 250GB- 2900
TFT viewsonic 17"- 9050
Cabinet -1300
mouselogitech optical- 500
he is asking for another 2500 for himself. I guess amc and all.
Overall its kind of expensive. And is there any problem in Intel 865?
