The Canon seems to be a much better bet here. 3.0 inch screen vs the run of the mill 2.5" screen on the Nikon. Better AF on the Canon and live view seals the deal for me here. And the fact that the Canon has a 2 MP jump on the Nikon doesn't help the Nikon much.

But I suppose there will be a $100 or so price gap between the two (body only).

The one thing going for Nikon is that their lens mount is more stable and more universally accepted. So you can replace a Nikon body with some other bodies too (I believe Fuji's DSLRs use Nikon's mount). Canon's EF is standard on canon's for many years, EF-S has fewer lenses and neither can be used on a non-Canon body.

Yeah but who over here is going to buy the Fuji cam ? Though Nikon consumer lenses are generally much better than consumer lenses from Canon.

Hmmm... the Fuji cam (IIRC) had IR photography... or was it an underwater camera? I can't remember, but something like that...

That is not so true now with the launch of the Canon 18-55 IS @ 7k and 55-250 IS @ 12k, both of which is awesome super sharp lenses for the price.

Otherwise, you always have 3rd party alternative before you actually move to the L's.

Once your ready to spend $600+ on a lens though, Canon completely blows Nikon out of the water.

Heh... the only place where nikon is ahead of canon is the sharpness of their wide angle lenses, though the difference now is miniscule after last year's 16-35 F/2.8L II lens launch. In primes yes nikon has a bit of an advantage. However in the middle focal lengths and in telephoto, nikon is not even close to two year old canon tech, forget the very latest.

Among low end lenses, the 7 grand 18-55 IS kills almost all Nikon entry level lenses.

been patiently waiting for this release since its announcement in Jan. The price seems to be perfect. Will be perfect one to replace my 350D

yeah, I wont be buying before March end anyway as in APril 1st week I have a chance to import it from the states through relatives if it comes to that. But usually gray market prices here tend to be good so waiting for it to become available here.

But isn't the 55-200 VR lens still better than the 55-250mm IS Canon lens ?

And how does the 18-55mm VR lens from Nikon compare with the 18-55mm IS lens from Canon ?

Thats because all Fuji DSLRs are Nikon bodies with Fuji's imaging system. Fuji has some deal with Nikon for providing bodies for them. S5 Pro is basically a D200 with Fuji's Super CCD sensor and imaging system. I think Nikon does not have much of any issue as Fuji caters to a very limited market size and for general users they(Fuji) are dead slow (atleast S3 was).

AFAIK most cross brand compatible system is Four-thirds - Olympus, Leica and Panasonic. Sony was interested in it till it took over Minolta. Otherwise lens mounts have always been proprietary assets.

Not sure but I think even Kodak used to source bodies from Canon, so could use Canon mount lenses.

eg. Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c using Canon mount but body made by Sigma
Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c, 14 mp, Canon mount: Digital Photography Review

and Kodak with Nikon mount-

Check the MTF charts on the 55-250 its sharper than a 70-300 IS USM lol. Besides there is talk of a 55-250 IS USM in April for marginally more.

No clue about the 18-55 VR, will have to shoot with it and then comment.

What will be the rough price of 450 D when its launched comapred to the US and here? Does it make more sense if i buy a 400D in the US than here?

^ Grey Market prices will be similar, here and the US. Downside is you don't get local warranty with grey purchases but you don't get local warranty with US purchases too.

Besides, most grey dealers will help you with service, so I'd say buy locally anyday!
