Storage Solutions New external HDD required to be used with Asus RT-N13U B1 router (DD-wrt) for downloading torrents

Novice
I have an old notebook with 120 GB 2.5” internal SATA HDD. Since, I am no longer using the notebook; I am using the HDD (placing in external casing) as external HDD.

This HDD is being exclusively used for connecting to Asus RT-N13U B1 router (DD-wrt) & downloading torrent, with no problems so far.

Now I have received quote for the notebook (incl. HDD) for Rs. 4000/-. So if I decide to sell I also have to give this HDD.

So I need a new external HDD to be used with Asus RT-N13U B1 router (DD-wrt) for downloading torrent.

I have come across following choices
1. Buying external HDD
Ø I will go for something which does not require external power & can run if connected to my router. Anything which would require me to use external power source is a no go. So I think I can’t go for 1 TB or more, because they generally need external power.
Ø I don’t need something with inbuilt back-up software. Cause I will only be using it for torrents.
Ø I have come across following pricing
¨ 500 GB - Around 3500
2. Buying an internal Laptop HDD & using with external casing
Ø I have come across following pricing
¨ 320 GB - Around 2500
¨ 500 GB - Around 2800-3000
¨ 1 TB - Around 3800
Ø Is Toshiba or Hitachi as good as Seagate or WD?

My considerations are as follows
· It will be formatted with ext2 or ext3 (I don’t think if it should impact my decision).
· I do not use this HDD to store files which can be shared across wi-fi (This is as per my present usage pattern). Really speaking, I would like to use attached HDD as to store files (music, movies) which can be shared across wi-fi. But, Asus RT-N13U B1 router has USB 2.0 port & as such limits the data transfer rate to & from attached HDD (So transferring large files take long time).
· I don’t need very high storage capacity. I use it only for downloading torrent, which are then transferred to local HDD once seeding is complete. Most of the torrents are small with max being 10-12 GB. So even 320 GB would be overkill.
· I would prefer something with longer warranty say 3 years. I have heard that external HDDs have shorter warranties.
· If I am to go for external HDD, should I go for USB 3.0. My MB does not have at present USB 2.0 post.

Kindly suggest a suitable solution. However, anything which would require me to use external power source is a no go.

Also, I have 2 Seagate 3.5” SATA HDD’s, which I initially planned to use for this purpose. However, I was told at shops that external enclosures for 3.5” SATA HDD’s are not reliable. But if there are external enclosures available at reasonable price, which are reliable, then I can also go for the same.

get any external 2.5inch usb 3 hdd which comes in your budget. external hdd's have 3 years warranty whereas internal have 1 or 2 now. dont know where you heard they have shorter warranties. toshiba & hitachi are good companies. i think toshiba uses wd's plants for making their hdd's. usb 3 is backwards compatible with usb 2 port.
