We are planning to renovate our home and get new furniture done. We will be buying / getting made

Sofa sets and couple of similar sofa chairs
Double bed and dressing table in a bedroom
a swing in main hall matching the sofaset
a glass top dining table with 6 chairs

Now we are in a tizzy as what should be done about the furniture ? Should we get it made through a good carpenter or buy it outrightly from a home furniture shop ?
We feel that the ready made furniture is not that durable and not made of good quality wood compared to the custom made ones(we may be wrong). Our previous furniture is all custom made by carpenter.

If outright buy is what you suggest, please let us know some good stores in Mumbai where we can check them out.

Glass top dining chairs and typical sofas are so boring and not unique.

Get a D shape marble top dining table and silk cover matching sofa and dining chairs. Preferably traditional khadi instead of the pathetically cheap everyday leather/leatherite in every sofa from cheap to expensive these days.. unless ofcourse you want it to look like every other millions of homes everywhere.

i wud suggest u to get it home made , no specific reasons why it shud be doen , but as u said , u can get ur own good quality wood and make the furniture look as u want

as far as the cost part goes , it almost same as getting it ready made

yeah u are right, According to me, one should buy good quality wood and give it to carpenter to make furniture. But carpenter must be trusted one.

Home made furniture would outclass the retail ones but would set you back by a considerable expense more than how much you would end up paying for the retail ones.

I wanted to get a simple wooden table but most shops had poor models for retail and Godrej was charging me close to 4.4k for a Interio model. :O

The current furniture we have has been made about 15+ years back if i remember and its wood is still very good. That is the reason we are more inclined towards getting it home made. Paying more now for a good quality furniture is not an issue, reliability is.

So can anyone suggest me websites where we can check latest designs available for sofa and double bed. Remember we also need a swing in main hall preferably matching the sofa alongside. We also plan to visit actual showrooms to get a cue of designs. Suggestions for good shops ?

Suggestions for good shops ?
1. @home by Nilkamal. They have good setups in the showroom as well. Expensive and the quality is decent by the looks of it.

2. Style Spa.

I'm also inclined towards products made by a carpenter especially if they are trustworthy.. try browsing the showrooms and if you find a design you like your carpenter should be able to make something similar

Let me start by mentioning that i run two retail furniture stores in NCR region. Now that being done i would seriously advise against getting furniture made at home. The time and energy involved is nowhere near the cost when you get the furniture from a retail store. Also you need to buy furniture from good retail stores to get the quality job. I have given furniture to a couple of people on the forums and i have always got more references/customers from them. Mind it i am not saying get it from me as it is not physically possible to get it delivered there but what you need to do is identify good stores and then you need to sit and discuss your requirements and then get your stuff made from them. It always better to get the job done from the professionals. A carpenter in my workshop who makes my sofa set frames will never be able to make the center table for the same sofa, leave aside the rest of the furniture. Have been doing this since last 10 years now so telling you by experience.

If you still intend to get it home made then you can go ahead with the beds and the wardrobes but get you dining set and sofas from a retail store.

i concur with switch , being an architect , i have seen the ones made at home with a bad finish that they take bucket loads of putty to hide their flaws , and the whole headache involved in getting it done , not worth it
if you want durable furniture , get the solid wood , seesham , which is cheaper or more cheaper is rubber wood , not the wood dust one

Switch, as you are in this business, i guess you must be having a few references in Mumbai region as well ? Also can you tell me what is IN currently ? Actually we dont want those sink inside sofas at all where when a person sits he/she just sinks in, want bit upright one with soft material. Also regzin (or whatever it is) / dunlop covers. Easy to clean stuff incase something falls on it.

i never understand this word " what is in" . especially in design sense , because what is "in" now wont be in after 4-5 years , will you be throwing out your furniture then ?
what is "in" is what you like , how comfortable you are with it and how well your house goes along with it , never go along with the crowd and get something that you dont like , follow your taste :)

my personal taste would be low level seatings , fabindia style furniture , wood , charpoi style of chairs ...

Ok guys so we are still in state of confusion but most probably will be going by roping in a carpenter to build a furniture but in order to check some of the design ideas and other stuff (like sofa and dining table) which will probably be bought directly. So can anyone list down few stores in western part of Mumbai where we can go and check these ??

I have clue about couple of shops named The Living Room in Kandivali east, some store in Oberoi mall, Goregaon east. Rest please suggest. Me, my dad and brother plan to go there coming saturday.
